Can't be beat if you like massive architecture dedicated to a marginally accomplished President, today we remember him mostly due to being assassinated, not for overseeing the end of the Spanish-American war or that he introduced the Dingley tariff to protect domestic industry.
That being said, the grounds and the tomb itself are massive and seems more inline with being an outdoor gym with lots of folks running up the stairs, kickboxing or otherwise enjoying a very nice spot.
Lincoln has a nice place, but I think just on the interior scale of this place McKinley gets the nod. Reminds me a lot of Napoleon's Invalides, not as grand and overwhelming but if you like domes and large blocks of highly polished stone, then you will enjoy this place.
Lots of parking, lots of steps, I don't know how a physically challenged person would see this as I did not see any other access besides the steps.
Free.
Museum next door charges to see items from the age of the Dino's to someone's phone collection (must have been an employee that retired after 40 years). Interesting mid century modern planetarium and other exhibits from kitchens to Ida...
Read moreWilliam McKinley, 25th President of The United States, is honored and laid to rest here inside of this memorial.
The monument is of epic proportions, challenging and living up to some of the great monuments I've seen in our Nation's capital. It is absolutely incredible to know there is such a gem right here in Ohio, and moreso, Canton.
The surrounding area is a tad rough but the park itself that it sits at the end of (and is named after our President), is very clean and well maintained. There is ample parking right at the base of the memorial, also, at the base you'll find The Presidential and science center.
I would recommend visiting during operation hours as that'll grant you access to inside the tomb to see the actual crypts, as well as the availability to take an elevator to the interior, if the steps are to much. There is an incredible amount of steps that could be proven to much for the physically impaired.
This is a great tribute to honor one of The United States greatest sons, that, I would highly recommend for anyone who has a sense of patriotism or simply love...
Read moreThe William McKinley National Memorial is the final resting place of President McKinley and his wife Ida. It is located adjacent to Westlawn Cemetery and is easily accessible from Interstate 75. It is also just a couple of Miles from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I visited the McKinley Memorial Tomb late in the day and there were only a few people here. There was plenty of parking available in front of the tomb. From the parking area there are 108 steps leading up to the entrance of the very large memorial. There is a handicapped accessible entrance located behind the memorial. Inside the ornate tomb are the twin sarcophagus that hold the remains of the President and his wife. The interior is impressive capped off with a colorful skylight at the top of the dome. The memorial tomb is located adjacent to the William McKinley President Library and Museum. However it was late in the day when I arrived and the Museum was...
