The Forest Park Theatre is a magical place. Nestled in the woods of Chapel Hill, it is a charming amphitheater that is perfect for a night of puppetry. The theater is surrounded by trees, and the sound of the crickets chirping in the background adds to the atmosphere.
The Paperhand Puppet Intervention is a world-renowned puppetry company that has been creating awe-inspiring shows for over 20 years. Their latest show, "Where Our Spirits Reside," is a celebration of the power of music and storytelling. The show features larger-than-life puppets, amazing singing, and a moving story about the importance of community.
The show begins with a pre-show performance by a talented mime. He silently entertained the audience set the tone for the show.
The main show then begins, and it is a feast for the senses. The puppets are so lifelike that they seem to come to life right before your eyes. The singing is beautiful, and the story is both heartwarming and thought-provoking.
The show is a perfect way to spend a summer evening. It is a show for the whole family, and it will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired.
Here are some additional details about the show:
The show is written by Nnenna Freelon, a Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter. The music is composed by Nnenna Freelon and her son Pierce Freelon, who is also a Grammy-nominated musician. The puppets are created by the Paperhand Puppet Intervention team, who are experts in creating large-scale puppets that are both beautiful and functional. The show is performed under the stars, which adds to the magic of the experience.
I highly recommend seeing "Where Our Spirits Reside" at the Forest Park Theatre while it is still showing every Thursday, Friday and Saturday til September 17 with a special Labor day performance September 4th. It is a show that will stay with you long after you have seen it.

The biggest advice I can give anyone coming here is two-fold: Arrive early to find parking as there is plenty of campus parking around, but you may have to search for a space. Bring something to sit on- there is plenty of space for setting up lawn chairs in the tiered amphitheatre rows, or blankets/pillows would also be very comfortable as long as they provide enough padding.
We saw a production of Into the Woods by Stone Soup Theatre Company which was delightful. The natural elements of the theatre itself would make any production needing trees in it's set feel very appropriate and help with immersion in...
Read moreIt's an open air theater in a relatively well shaded area on campus. Parking is adequate if you're attending a show on a night or weekend when campus isn't too busy. There are no seats (stone seats instead) so I'd recommend bringing a seating pad or at minimum a blanket if you're going to be seeing something longer than half an hour. The stage is dirt and crushed stone so larger shows will bring in a floor for the dancers. There's also no formal sound system but again, it's an outdoor location so I wouldn't expect it. Biggest thing to know is related to the importance of bringing...
