Whenever I go somewhere new I like to try the regional 'must do' places. This restaurant was on several lists, and I love bbq, so I thought it would be a slam dunk. Nope, and this place is a fire hazard or accident waiting to happen. I visited around 4:30 pm on a Thursday. There was no one else in the restaurant. The guy cleaning the warming station did not even acknowledge me. Older gentleman, perhaps the owner, came out and handled my order. As soon as the transaction was done he disappeared. I was not offered or received any sauces, or condiments of any kind. Could not find any out in the dining area. I walked up to the service area for a second and no one asked me if I needed anything. The food itself was okay, but really needed some sauce or something. Nothing special, and kind of bland. If that were the end of my experience I would have just cut my losses, wrote this off as 'just not for me' and moved along without posting. However, when I was eating in the restaurant, I noticed a couple stacks of boxes being stored next to the dining area that were stacked floor to ceiling. Those boxes were completely unperturbed, but fell very loudly into the dining area, and into several seats. No one came out to investigate or to pick them up. The attached picture shows those boxes after they fell. Thank goodness that there were no customers sitting there!! To the management, stacking boxes floor to ceiling is a fire hazard and an accident waiting to happen. Sure, I was only one customer, but a little bit of good service goes a long way.

Fried Chicken, MJ Legends & a Bucket of Bones While visiting UNC Chapel Hill, we made a stop at Time-Out, and it turned into one of the most unexpectedly charming, delicious, and story-filled meals of our trip. The owner, who still works the register after many decades, told us the backstory behind their legendary Bucket of Bones - a brilliant bit of Southern ingenuity. Back in the day, they’d cut the meat off fried chicken for sandwiches and were left with a pile of bones still loaded with flavor. So what did they do? Gave folks a way to eat what many really want anyway: the juicy, tender meat right by the bone. A hit was born, apparently and Michael Jordan loved it too when he was in school at UNC. He still comes by from time to time, we were told. But truly, the fried chicken is the standout. That crackly, hard shell crust? Unreal. It breaks apart like a potato chip and gives way to perfectly seasoned meat. Collard greens were melt-in-your-mouth tender. The mac and cheese didn’t hit the same- too much oil and that familiar separation that happens when the cheese sauce “breaks” from overheating or too much fat without emulsification. Cornbread was sweet, more like a honey cake and made a great unofficial dessert. The place feels like a diner frozen in time in the best way - a classic buffet line, Southern hospitality, and storytelling that stays with you. I’d definitely come back, if only for that bucket and that crust.

I think that all restaurants need to be considered in the context of their intentions/purpose/category. Even if you go to a fine dining restaurant, the meal you get there may not be as good as a sandwich at your local deli, despite the supposed "higher quality" food or the better service. I bring that up because Time-Out is one of those restaurants that has a unique category that needs to be considered...late night drunk food. When I knew I was coming to Chapel Hill, I originally wanted to come to Time-Out because I had seen it on Man vs. Food and I love a good fried chicken sandwich. However, I had heard from several UNC alums that it was not great food so I decided I wouldn't plan for it. However, after a night on Franklin Street, we found our way in line at Time-Out. You order at a counter with everything out behind a glass case like at a cafeteria. It was around 2 AM and it was being manned by just one guy. We each got a fried chicken sandwich and some mac and cheese, both of which were greasy but good. The biscuit was pretty buttery and the chicken was slightly dry but as far as drunk food goes...it got the job done. Don't expect the best chicken biscuit sandwich you've ever had. It's also a great place for drunk people watching as people file in here from the bars. Probably won't be back but hey, glad I had this Chapel Hill experience.

HISTORY DOESN'T MEAN GOOD FOOD. With time we all improve ourselves. This place did not and has not. I have no clue how or why this place is even still in business other than drunk college students and starving desperate people who unknowingly wander in since it's basically the ONLY 24hr place to eat besides waffle House and Denny's (either place would be a better option.) Especially if your new to the area and you read some of these reviews claiming it's "southern comfort food". It's a sad attempt at best. Know that there are very very few places open late in the Raleigh/Durham area even fewer open 24/7. There are a large amount of bars that are open later than food, and that fact alone keeps this place in business. HOWEVER It's absolutely skipable. Food was waaaay too salty, cold, and just no. If you like classic southern comfort food and want it ruined look no further. Mac and cheese is really the only eatable thing but even that is bad. Biscuits are dry dry dry and also salty. And as if the food wasn't bad enough the customer service is terrible ☹️ and the tables and facilities are not clean. Skip it people! Not worth the time or the money.

This review was originally posted last year. And updated after another visit 3 months ago. Telling me now you care about you customers after so much time has passed and ignoring the whole purpose of my review HISTORY DOESN'T MEAN GOOD FOOD comes off as damage control and disingenuous. The food was cold, salty, and overall not good. (Public school lunch food) The place was NOT clean. The tables, counter where you order, floor, and bathroom. Staff was/is rude. Didn't answer any questions, rushed the order with no one else there and didn't care when I said the food was cold and way to salty. I got biscuits, 2 chicken (dark and light to give it a chance) and Mac and cheese (again) My review did not change because nothing changed. I'm happy you've run a business that's lasted so long. I hope you can make the changes necessary to keep the place there...

I have never been talked to so nasty by someone. Yelling at me that I didn't pay for my food even thought I showed my receipt and email and bank statement. In front of a crowd like I was trying to steal someone's food. Then after should found that it was her mistake she was still rude and made excuses for why she was rude while a restaurant full of people stood and watch. And after a hour of going back and forth my food still wasn't even ready. I contacted customer service and walked back in the store while she answered the phone and while standing front of me she lied to the lady on the phone telling her that she was short staffed and told us that she didn’t have any more chicken which was one of the items I ordered. After she got off the phone she canceled my order without asking me what I would like to do about my food that after a hour now was still not ready. I had it out with her in the store because your nasty and all that was uncalled for. My thing is the cook told me the chicken was ready and she told me all I was waiting on after 45 mins that my eggs bacon and pancakes needed to be cooked. Ok so why another 30 mins later you never attempted to cook my food. Chit chatting with staff let one off the clock I see one clock in and you have 2 in the back. So your not short staffed and everyone is talking so you would think my food is ready nope nothing. So after a hour and twenty mins no food and got a refund. And I was asked to leave because I did call her a B. Still full of excuses why I didn’t have any food to show for the hella long wait! So I guess I’ll never know what the food tastes like cuz I can’t...
