When Joseph Rosenberg (1848 – 1891) worked as a newsboy in the hot Chicago sun, he often became very thirsty. Unable to convince local merchants to spare him a drink of water, he vowed that if he should he ever become rich, he’d create a fountain where all people would be welcome to quench their thirst.
After making his fortune, Rosenberg left a $10,000 bequest for an ornamental drinking fountain in Grant Park. Built near his childhood home, the fountain features Hebe, the Goddess of Youth, daughter of Zeus, and cupbearer to the gods. Today, the statue continues to provide water.
