It's not everyday you see waterfalls in the middle of a city setting. Usually you find them in out of the way natural locations. To see one in the middle of a city setting next to an abandoned building, flowing under a railroad track and past an 858' long and 114' high pedestrian foot bridge (Pont Dr Rennes bridge). The bridge is quite high, so it can be scary for those afraid of heights (like me). The east bank viewing platform at the High Falls Terrace Parks gives you a close and fantastic view of the powerful 96' fall. Another fantastic view is from the rooftop of the Genesee Brew House opposite the falls. You can see the rock formations made up of shale, limestone, sandstone and iron ore. The falls are part if the Genesee River which flows thru Rochester, a city on the mend and recovering after Kodak filed for bankruptcy and Xerox left downtown Rochester. I did not stick around till dark to see if the falls were lit at night. Suggest stay at the local Hyatt in downtown Rochester not only to visit the falls, but to take in the local sites such as the Rochester Museum and Science Center which has a planetarium, and the Strong...
Read moreVisited High Falls in Rochester and let me just say: she’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s aggressively pouring brown water, sadly not bourbon, in your face (if you get too close).
This place is way cooler than I expected. It’s like someone said, “What if we took a natural wonder and plopped it in the middle of an old Kodak postcard?” Industrial chic meets Mother Nature’s flex.
You’re standing on this pedestrian bridge like, “Wow, this is peaceful,” and then BAM, the falls roar like they just found out it’s Monday again. 96 feet of pure drama. Meryl Streep wishes she had this kind of range.
Bring a camera, bring a friend, bring your existential thoughts. High Falls will deliver a free therapy session in mist form.
Highly recommend for: ✔️ Photos ✔️ Deep thoughts ✔️ Trying to impress out-of-town guests who think Rochester is only garbage...
Read moreLovely walking area. Great place to sit and fall in love. The falls lit up at night are mesmerizing. My sweetheart took me here often in our first summer together-- we'd ride through the city after dark on our bikes, and then stroll hand in hand along the bridge looking at the colors change in the mist. We'd always stay up way too late, not wanting the magic to end. I really love it when a train goes by, and the moon is rising over the cityscape behind the water. You wonder at all the lives that pass behind the dark windows in the buildings, and if any of them are looking back out at you, and the moon and the water. Or as I accidently put in one night when I was very sleepy, with my head resting on his shoulder but the night was too beautiful to pull ourselves away -- I love when the water-light...
