I recently had the opportunity to visit the Colonial Beach Boardwalk in Colonial Beach, Virginia and I must say, it was a wonderful alternative to other Maryland or Virginia beaches in the area. One of the things that stood out to me about this beach was the unique texture of the sand. Unlike other beaches, the sand here had a mixture of rocks, shells, and a slightly coarser grade. It gave the beach a distinct character and added to the overall charm of the place. What truly made the Colonial Beach Boardwalk special was the presence of local vendors lined along the boardwalk. It felt like a beachside flea market, with a wide variety of souvenirs and trinkets available for purchase. It was a pleasure to stroll along and browse through the different offerings. In addition to the vendors, there were several restaurants along the boardwalk, some of which even offered live entertainment. It was a great way to enjoy a meal while taking in the lively atmosphere. The views of the Maryland shoreline from the boardwalk were breathtaking and added to the overall beauty of the location. I was also pleased to learn that there are several scheduled events planned for the summer at the Colonial Beach Boardwalk. This ensures that there is always something exciting happening, making it a perfect destination for a weekend getaway or a few days of relaxation. Furthermore, the Colonial Beach Boardwalk is conveniently located close to a few highly rated restaurants in Colonial Beach. So, if you're looking to satisfy your culinary cravings, you won't have to venture far. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Colonial Beach Boardwalk if you're in the area. It offers a unique beach experience with its distinct sand, local vendors, and vibrant atmosphere. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a few days of relaxation, this is definitely a place worth considering.

Located on a peninsula in Virginia's historic Northern Neck, Colonial Beach offers a distinctive coastal experience as a resort town situated not on the ocean, but on the wide expanse of the Potomac River. The town is famous for its laid-back, retro atmosphere, best exemplified by its status as a "golf-cart friendly" community, where the quiet hum of electric carts is the prevailing sound for both residents and visitors. This unique culture fosters a slow-paced, vacation-ready vibe along what is the second-longest public beach in Virginia, offering calmer waters and a more relaxed setting than the bustling Atlantic coast. The waterfront, featuring a town pier and a small boardwalk, is the center of activity, perfect for fishing, boating, or simply enjoying the river views. However, what truly sets Colonial Beach apart is its role as a gateway to foundational American history. It serves as a convenient and charming base for exploring the birthplaces of two U.S. Presidents—the George Washington Birthplace National Monument and the James Monroe Birthplace—as well as the nearby Stratford Hall Plantation, historic home of the Lee family. This ability to easily combine a casual day at the beach with a deep dive into the nation's origins makes Colonial Beach a truly unique and memorable Virginia destination.

definitely NOT a boardwalk but a concrete-walk maybe about 1mi? not many stores open but did come off-season (in late Aug) and the sand was rough. we also noted many jellyfish along the shoreline. great for digging/sunbathing, not so much for swimming.

This place was a complete bust and disappointment. I drove with my family 1:30 hours to literally drive right back because of how bad it was.

To start, the small town there had and extremely creepy Erie feel to it. Every single store diner, ice cream shop you name it seemed to be open but nobody was in them, I swear it felt like the the house of wax town, no joke.

We arrive at “the beach” to find out we couldn’t grill our food because it wasn’t allowed, and to make matters worse the water had thousands of jelly fish so we could not go in. They said it had a boardwalk, nope just an old pier about to crumble. It also had an abandoned power plant, I swear the feel of the place was Erie, like those waters are not meant for swimming and the town felt abandoned.

Do yourself a favor do not waste your day and time going...
