My experience through my eyes.
Today I walked into this location with my daughter. We had just had lunch and I wanted to purchase her a few things to reward her for her academic accomplishment this past week
Upon walking in we noticed Halloween decor and clothes. As we started looking at a few items I observed two store employees walking over to our direction. Neither of them spoke to us, but seemed to talk among themselves and move items around on an end-cap. I thought to myself, all the people in this store right now it's odd that they would be hovering around our vicinity.
As we moved towards another location I heard them welcome the next guest entering the store. As I looked over my shoulder I noticed those guest were white. I'm not sure if they didn't see us but I wrote it off as them being close to the door as the next guest entered.
I kept it moving and continued to shop around with my daughter.
When we got to the self check-out I noticed only two register were in use and two white customers were checking out without any assistance.
As I approached the open register, one of the same associates from earlier met me at the register. The associate gestured to check my items out for me at the self-checkout. I didn't understand why they needed to assist me at self-chechout but I didn't want to hold up the line.
The associate scanned two items for me and I notified the associate that I could finish the process on my own and said thank you. I noticed that the next customer beside me was an African American woman who the associate also began checking her items out as well.
Now, I'm not accusing anyone of being racist or bias but I do think this was a case of implicit bias.
To gravitate towards us the moment we walk in, all of a sudden start working in our location, walk away from that area the second we move on, then when we arrive at self-checkout gesture that you will check us out, that feels to me like implicit bias.
I think the store looks amazing with the new layout and having a self checkout helps expedite customers payments. I also think you should invest in REI training as well.
I believe you find what you look for, and maybe my life experiences have made me hypersensitive to things like this, but i didn't walk in today looking for bias, I walked in just trying to get my daughter something cool for her accomplishment.
I don't feel like this person/person's intentionally followed us around, but I think their perception of black people may be undeserved.
I hope that you do not take this review as slander or anything specific towards your employees. I'm merely stating that from someone who's used to being followed around stores because of my gender and race, this gave me an...
Read moreVery poor customer service attitude. I came in today on 7/21 at 1pm with my kids to specifically purchase a gamer headset in the $5-$6 range for my son. We found a one with a side mic for $7 grouped with about 10 others of the same and 2 other varieties stacked and $7 as well. We went to the register and it rang up for $10. I informed the cashier that it is listed for $7 along with many others. She called over help from a male name D. I went over to the section and waited for him and proved the price was correct. He said, “I did not have space to put them anywhere else so I put them there”. My jaw dropped! He never said it was a mistake or he was sorry for the i convenience. So I asked if we can get it for the price that we found because we did not make the error. He just backed up, took a bow and walked away. I went back to the front and i formed the cashier of his response and that we should still get it for the price of $7. She ignored me and turned to another customer and called for the gentleman again. I turned to a customer and explained what happened as she was present the whole time. No one was trying to rectify or say anything to me and my son. We came out the store empty handed. Very disappointed in this Five Below. I have shopped at others for years with no issue. Be careful when you shop here. The cashier was an older Hispanic woman and the other employee was a younger light skinned male with twist or braids...
Read moreHorrible customer service at this location! I had dinner across the street and decided to take kids to get some candy and toys, I noticed they closed in 30 mins but I figure we would be in and out. We walked in and went straight to the candy and told my kids they have about 20 mins to get something than all the sudden i hear laughing and the workers using their wakies talkies to speak Spanish to one another cracking jokes about customers coming in last min and than yelled on the microphone to say the store closes in 10 mins . Which was odd because they actually close in 25 mins. They proceeded to speak Spanish to one another continuously making jokes about everyone in the store. I don’t think they even realize that I could understand everything they were saying. I couldn’t believe the unprofessional foul language they were using around children. How can management let this happen in a place that children come to explore and buy things! I felt uncomfortable and disgusted at the fact that the staff continued to do this up untill it was time to go. I started recording because this was unacceptable! I will be calling corporate or a manager asap! I will not be returning untill those employees are let go! Such a shame because I love this place but I will not take the disrespect upon shopping!! Horrible horrible customer service!!! Please reach out to me to...
