J-Kim Hair Design — Attraction in Annandale

I got a volume magic straightening and C-curl perm from Karina on September 30. Originally, I only planned to do the volume magic straightening, but during the process, she suggested adding a C-curl perm at the bottom, saying it would look nice—so I agreed. I clearly told her that I just wanted a C-curl with overall volume.

However, the result was a disaster. There was absolutely no sign of “volume Straightening.” Even after more than a week, my hair is still flat and stuck to my head on top, and the bottom looks like an S-curl from a regular perm. Right after the treatment, when I was shocked by the result, she even tried to brush through the curls as if to loosen or hide them.

Everyone who’s seen my hair says the same thing—that the top is completely flat while the bottom looks puffy like a mushroom. It’s really upsetting, and every time I look in the mirror, I feel frustrated and regretful! When I called to complain, they said they could redo it and mentioned that she has "good skills,” but isn’t that for the customers to judge, not her?

Now that I’ve talked to others who’ve gone to her, I realize their experiences weren’t good either. She gave my layered hair full S-curls all over the bottom, so I can’t even wear it down anymore. Going here is a waste of both money and time! I would absolutely not...

​The initial process, with multiple people (2-3 Korean ladies) attending to my hair for shampooing and drying, felt chaotic and unnecessary. It was confusing and made me wonder why so many individuals were required for basic care.

​Despite the number of people involved, the final result was nothing like the reference photo I showed my stylist. I waited a week after my appointment hoping the style would improve, but it has not.

​For the poor quality of the cut and style, the price of $350 plus tip is exorbitant and frankly, a joke. Do not waste your money here.

​It appears the salon relies heavily on its owner calling acquaintances to fill the schedule, rather than attracting new, satisfied customers.

I visited J-Kim for a last-minute hairstyle for a photoshoot. They were extremely accommodating and fit me in at the last minute. Right away, I was impressed by the way the stylists and assistant worked together seamlessly to move things along quickly, but without cutting corners. My stylist did an amazing job, taking great care with my damaged, bleached hair but still working efficiently to get me out of there on time. The style turned out better than I ever expected -- In fact, I think it's the best my hair has ever been styled! On top of that, it held all day, even through my very windy outdoor photoshoot, and dinner afterward! As a side-note, don't be afraid to go here if you aren't Korean --- these stylists are very skilled and they can handle it!...
