Shady Lane Records — Attraction in Hyattsville

Really great shop. I grew up in Hyattsville and I wish we had anything this cool here when I was younger and had more disposable income. Even still, better relate than never! Very cool and helpful staff, and a huge inventory of records (and books, and CDs, and some cassettes) with a great selection of new releases and classic used stuff, and lots of bargains. They also buy records so if you have an old collection to unload, give them a call (so I can end up buying your old records). Lastly, they seem to get new stuff in all the time, which is great. I’ve started trying to go at least once a week to see what’s new and always seem to find...

Dropped by today after work and spent some time digging. Found a few used records in solid condition at very fair prices, and had a nice conversation with a store employee. There is a reasonable experimental/avant used section here, plus lots of love for labels like VHF and Three Lobed. I've struggled to find a wide selection of that sort of stuff in DC, so this is my new go-to spot. There are also several other good record stores within walking distance, so you really have no excuse not to check...

Red Onion is situated in the best possible spot in Hyattsville. Because it's not directly in one of the main commercial spots, it FEELS like a neighborhood record store. Many of the customers are regulars, and the owner knows most of them because he's also a neighbor. The prices are fair and the selection is always changing, but any good record store has those features. Red Onion is like the Cheers of record stores.
