The entire operation is run very professionally. First, all of the technical equipment is state of the art. It seems like no expense was spared in the acquisition of the lighting, the audio, Giana's headset, the webcam, and all of the other behind-the-scenes gear that makes the classes run smoothly. It was smartly chosen in a way that makes it an integral part of the class without calling attention to itself. Second, I appreciate the effort that Giana puts into 'lesson planning', as it were. As the class start-time approached, she would begin relating a story to us, as if just having a conversation. But in fact the story would turn out to be an allegory for the theme of the class. One minute you're just listening to her talk about an experience her sister had in Sedona, and the next minute you're settling into your starting yoga position with your mind on the goal of the day's class. The music throughout the class is specifically supportive of that goal, as opposed to being random background noise. Then after sixty minutes she just as smoothly brings it all back to the opening story, reinforcing the class's goal and lending closure to the lesson. It was structured in the manner of a good sermon, yet not at all preachy. As a teacher, Giana was both strong and nurturing. She led us through our paces with confidence and authority, but she wasn't hesitant to quietly approach the mat and use a laying-on of the hands to help a novice (like myself) adjust to the proper position. Nice touch. My stay in Fort Myers was just ten days, but I managed to take three classes at Shiva Yoga Shala, which was recommended by a friend. I'm so glad I...
Read moreIt is quite a statement, “yoga saved my life,” and yet you hear it in every studio in the county. Being a ‘seasonal local’ my personal practice has allowed me to venture into many diverse studios throughout the years and states that we have traveled. There is none that compares to the Shiva Yoga Shala. This shala (home) is in its second month and already its healing presence in this community is palpable. Connecting yoga and dance communities and blending flow with other types of yoga, combined with Ageless Flow, a program for anyone that needs breath and movement in their life, allows anyone to practice, even if it is from a chair. Nick and Giana have created more than a studio but a space that will be connecting people to others and to themselves for years to come. Nick’s vast experiences and own personal journey combined with Giana’s energy and dedication along with their father/daughter energy is recognizable immediately. This space, with its simplicity allows each person to learn to support themselves on their mat and align with their life’s mission. Whether you are a local, a snowbird or someone who needs a life alignment, come and try out their introductory classes. You will be...
