I absolutely love the entire Historic District in DeFuniak Springs, especially Lake DeFuniak!
After a long day of work, I’ll take a walk around Lake DeFuniak, (while taking-in the beautiful and natural ecosystem of all the wildlife that calls that inhabits the park and lake), along with all the beautiful and historic homes and buildings that surround, I simply feel full and happy afterwards! There’s something quite special and rare about the wildlife blending with the historic presence that has this “WOW” factor; which always leaves me with this feeling of being in the presence of something that has gracefully and timelessly withstood the rest of time.
I recommend bringing your own personal kayak, canoe &/or peddle board to explore the lake and visit the wildlife here. To be in the center of this perfectly round lake is not something that everyone has the opportunity to experience, which again, adds to the presence and unique aspects this area has to offer!
If you’re not a fan of being on the open water, I also find that it’s fun to take advantage of the beautiful greenery that surrounds the lake, often bringing yard games to play with friends and family. Out of all the games we bring, frisbee is my best activity! 😍
From the revitalization of the beautiful historic homes and downtown that surround, I can see the love for this community alongside the progress that has taken place, has all been with the right step forward.
To top it off, the community here is warm and inviting, being that they treat everyone with a warm smile and kindness that is rarely ever seen in this day and age.
Lastly, this town holds several events that all take place within the Historic District and around the lake. Out of all the events, the Christmas Reflections is (HANDS DOWN) my absolute favorite! Can you imaging millions of lights and Christmas decorations, beautifully staged and strung around the trees and greenery throughout the park, all reflecting off of the glass-like surface of the lake? Oh my gosh, it’s what dreams are made of and takes me back to that warm and fuzzy, magical youthful feeling of Christmas I had as a small child (as an adult of nearly 40 now)! Its so beautiful, even to take-in during the day and night!

Read moreThe Christmas lights are so pretty! In the past 5 years, I have been there three times. If you drive around slowly with a few stops to make photos, it takes about 45 to 55 minutes to get done viewing all of the light displays. I recommend that you visit at least once. Some people have said that it isn't worth the time and gas to drive 26 miles to go see this, but I disagree. But you NEED to get there early by 5:45 pm at latest or you may be waiting in a long line of cars for 1 to nearly 2 hours to buy the tickets. Tickets cost $3 per person for adults and seniors. Display is from early December through 1st week of January. Check City of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, website for exact...

We find such joy in our daily walks around the lake, watching the world come alive. Feeding the ducks and turtles gives us a sense of connection to nature, and we always make it a point to enjoy the various events that bring our community together by the water. The lake has truly become a peaceful refuge for us, a serene haven in this town that we will...
