Read moreThe trolley tour was awesome. Very interesting facts were shared about the Hershey's family history and how the Hershey factory started. I especially enjoyed being able to get small treats for snacking on while riding the trolley. The staff were really friendly - giving out the ticket tokens and on the trolley.
As a deaf person - the only draw back was that we gave them enough notice (a week or more in advance) to arrange for interpreters. The limited number of staff interpreters they had on hand were not available on this day/time, so they thought it was ok to pull someone else who "knows" sign language and has a background knowledge/understanding about the Hershey history to interpret for me - this was not acceptable to either my husband or me. As a deaf person, being informed that the person isn't fluent in sign language and not qualified to do the interpreting job just rubs off the wrong way. Furthermore, the person said she can sign a little, and then I can read the book the front desk/ticket people gave me. My husband and I asked for the manager after the tour and he sincerely apologized for this. I hope this doesn't happen to any other Deaf visitors after we have expressed our concerns in a polite way.
The book was very helpful - but it is noted that each conductor will be different on their tours - and while the information in the book was all covered on the tour, it was not in the exact order of the book (most of it is, but there was few occasions where it jumped back and forth a tiny bit, not very much) plus there is so much more information that is expanded on or shared by the conductor's personal experience (for example, the one we had actually went to school as a youth there). However, having access to live narration is important so that I can understand the jokes the same time as the hearing visitors and appreciate the bad puns during the tour as well.
But other than that slight unexpected experience, the trolley tour is definitely a great one to check out if you ever...
Read moreIf you are both a chocolate lover and a history buff, this tour is for you! I live relatively close to Hershey and have taken this tour several times during the HersheyPark off season when things are less busy. It is a bit different but no less excellent each time. You get to see some of the historic sights of Hershey that you may not otherwise notice or even get to see in some cases (like Milton Hershey's mansion). Each tour is led by an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide (shout out for my most recent tour guide Kim and driver Mitch for being fantastic). They feed you chocolate all along the way as relevant parts of the Hershey story come up.
I would not recommend this tour for very young children. It is a little over an hour long and it geared toward older children and adults. Some of the younger children on my most recent tour got very restless about 30 minutes in. (Note: We took the longer educational tour as the more kid-friendly tour is not available in the off season.)
You can purchase your tickets at Chocolate World (where parking is free, btw), and the trolley leaves from and returns to that location. You do not get off the trolley anywhere else so please don't plan on using it as transportation into downtown Hershey. It's strictly a tour. At about $16 per person, this tour is a great value compared to many of the other Chocolate World ticketed...
