the des moines farmer's market is a riot to go to, and by riot i mean two different definitions of the word... it's fun, educational, kind of party like, such as a block party, it's fabulous for people watching, ( even better than an airport!), BUT, it can seem like a riot, in the negative because some people get a little nuts, and boisterous, and most annoyingly, they WON'T get outta you're way!
This is especially irritating if you happen to be ♿ disabled, handicapped in any way.. if you're confined to a hoveround type chair, or using a walker, you might as well be INVISIBLE!! People form little 'mini groups' in the middle of any street you're perusing, and become oblivious to your existence.. only until you unfortunately have to honk your horn, or with a loud voice say " um, excuse me please"!!
Another BIG NEGATIVE to your market experience /shopping, is the prices on the majority of goods offered, will be 20 - 50% HIGHER than at any chain grocery store you usually patronize.. but, any way you dissect this colorful and must go at least once microcosm of this june thru october outdoor shop-o - rama, GO.. DRINK IT IN, might even bump into someone ya know!
It's worth at least TWO visits, be prepared to spend more $$$ than you hoped you wouldn't, and by ALL MEANS, stop at the dutch bakery stand and get some DUTCH LETTERS!! those right there make it worth the snail's pace...
Read moreBest Farmer's Market you'll visit! There is something for everyone here: smoothies, pastries, soap, services, coffee, breakfast, flowers, woodwork, jewelery, fresh veggies, plants, clothes, knitting, honey, popcorn, specialty everything 😉! We love the atmosphere. Busy, yet if you get on the sidewalk (off the street), you'll find places to sit and relax. People bring their dogs and we love how friendly everyone is! It's like taking people from all over the Greater DM area, throwing them in one big crowd, and everyone gets along. It's great! Idk why, but really, everyone seems to get along here and that's the best part. 😁. Oh, and the live music on every corner, that's the other best part! And all the glorious smells of food and...
Read moreIf you are in Des Moines or live there the Farmer's Market is worth getting up for early on a Saturday morning. I love visiting other cities Farmer's Markets - color me strange - while traveling. I wasn't expecting it to be so big and so diverse in its offerings. Local produce. Fresh flowers. Local artists. Oh, and local wineries too! It was a little bit of heaven on a Saturday morning. Since I was walking, I don't know how parking works. I noticed there are a few parking garages. As with any market, you would be advised to bring cash along with your card just in case. Block out plenty of time as well, it is HUGE. I stopped trying to figure out how many blocks it covered. If you are into markets, this one is worth...
