I highly recommend visiting the Motown Museum if you are in the Detroit midtown area on a weekday. Looking back in time to a place that I walked past frequently growing up in the mid-1960's this place is a hidden gem. Available to be enjoyed by all. I started visiting the museum when it initially opened and photos inside weren't allowed. That policy is no longer in place, with the exception of the introductory video. That is much appreciated. The tour guides are very through, knowledgeable, polite and accommodating. If you like visiting frequently, as I do, I recommend purchasing a membership (individial or family). It pays for itself in a few visits. Plus your membership allow you to enter drawings for local concerts (not just Motown artists). Kudo's to the co-curator who assembled the "First Lady of Motown - Claudette Robinson" exhibit (currently on display). The exhibit is well organized, well presented, excellent lighting and displayed in such a way you can appreciate her life, her legacy and her contribution to The Miracles. Oftentimes we forget it wasn't just the guys in the group who helped carry their sound. She contributed years after retiring from performing onstage. Her voice can be heard on many recordings years afterwards. (Thank you Claudette and daughter Tamla Robinson). The tour is interesting but can't wait until the other houses are completed and open to the public. There is also another building that is being renovated on the westbound side of West Grand Blvd that is part of the Motown Museum property. Once the entire project is completed this is going to be a Museum to rival all others. If I can offer two suggestions: Please highlight more female groups, (no disrespect, but there were more than The Supremes) or female artists, and songwriters. Expand the gift shop and it's products even if it has to be in a different...
Read moreOur recent visit to the Motown Museum was an absolute highlight of showing our out-of-town friends a piece of Detroit's rich history and vibrant culture. Knowing their love for music, it was the perfect destination, and it truly delivered an unforgettable experience. Stepping into Hitsville U.S.A. felt like stepping back in time to the heart of an era that shaped the global music landscape.
What makes the Motown Museum so special is the tangible connection to the artists and the music. It's more than just displays; you get a sense of the energy and creativity that flowed within those very walls. Our friends were captivated by the stories and the artifacts, from iconic costumes (i.e. MJ’s hat) to personal memorabilia. What's particularly unique is the opportunity to see a movie reel featuring all the Motown stars and rare items that you simply can't find anywhere else, offering a deeper glimpse into the Motown phenomenon and its cultural impact beyond the records.
The museum beautifully chronicles the journey of Motown, from its humble beginnings to its worldwide success. It's a powerful testament to the talent, dedication, and vision of Berry Gordy Jr. and the countless artists, songwriters, and musicians who made the Motown sound. For anyone interested in music history, American culture, or simply experiencing the magic of Motown firsthand, a visit to this Detroit gem is an absolute must. It's an inspiring and educational experience that leaves you with a profound appreciation for the legacy of this iconic...
Read moreWow, I just couldn't believe the incredible experience with such an affordable price. I went on a Friday and did not realize that guided tour tickets were required to view the exhibits. They were sold out for the day :( but, keeping in spirit with the amazing people of Detroit, the security guard was very pleasant and helpful with information on how to visit the museum the next day. Yet as my friend and I were starting to leave, they waved us back in and said they could squeeze in two more people! We were in! Our tour guide, although young, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. When she demonstrated the echo chamber that was built into the attic of the house, everyone in our tour group was blown away! The museum showcases a short video of the history of Motown, followed by 2 floors of history. The original apartment upstairs where the owner used to live (so midcentury!), and a section with walls and walls of photos, memoribilia, and trivia. I would have loved to spend more time looking at each photo and album cover. Unfortunately, photos and videos are strictly prohibited so I can only upload from the outside. But believe me, I had to tip the tour guide extra because I didn't think we paid enough to get into the museum! If you're in Detroit even for half a day, definitely check out...
