Some folks might say that you’re wasting your time writing a 5-star review for a place as universally celebrated as Michigan & Trumbull. This place already has over a thousand reviews and an average rating of 4.8 stars. But sometimes you’ve just gotta weigh in and let the world know how you really feel. Hey, you know what else is great? Pulp Fiction. Awesome movie. I give it 5 stars, fer sure. It’s also worth pointing out that the band Led Zeppelin deserves 5 stars! Oh, and can’t forget about that Game of Thrones show either. That right there is a 5-star no-brainer, am I right? Finally, there’s hot sex with a competent partner. Gee, I wish I could give that TEN stars! I should probably get around to talking about the actual pizza one of these days, but even that seems a bit superfluous, seeing as Bon Appétit magazine very recently beat me to it. I am, however, going to avoid using the word “pizzaiolo” multiple times because I’m not some pretentious intellectual sort. I like to keep things fairly straightforward, like my pizza order, for example. My dining cohort and I tend to order the same thing every time. Why would we want to eff with something that’s already perfect? That’d be like inserting the number 69 into the Fibonacci sequence and pretending it’s edgy. Our version of perfection is typically just mushrooms and onions, but don’t let the simplicity fool you. This isn’t some limp, tragic veggie medley phoned in by a can-opener-wielding teenager who just discovered nihilism. This is divinity. The mushrooms are tender, earthy, and clearly saw daylight sometime this century—maybe even this month, imagine that. These aren’t the sad, rubbery discs you find floating in translucent goo from the depths of some Del Monte hellscape. No. These are real mushrooms. Forest-born. Sun-kissed. The kind that’s spent more time in soil than in storage. The onions? Look, it’s pretty hard to screw up onions as a pizza topping. Any place that manages to do so should be razed to the ground and salted over, Old Testament–style. I’m happy to report that Michigan & Trumbull has never disrespected an onion in their care. Soft, sweet, just the right amount of caramelization. It’s like they actually give a damn, and I appreciate that in a pizza joint. Since this prose is already turning a deep shade of purple, I’m going to tell my inner Proust to take it down a notch. You don’t need a full chapter on the structure of their pizza. If you don’t already know about the crust and the sauce on a truly top-tier Detroit-style pizza, get in your car right now and plug 1331 Holden into your GPS. I don’t care if you are at work, or you need to pick the kids up from karate practice, or you’re on house arrest sporting an Irish Rolex. Just do it. Do it now. If you’re still not convinced, let me tell you about the first time I bit into this pizza. There was an audible crunch, which gave way to a Requiem for a Dream montage. I accidentally moaned. Loudly. My vision started to vibrate. I made the kind of face one might make in Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend when they’re playing that electronic computer music at a very loud volume and for some reason you’re now dancing and hugging people you just met about 45 minutes ago. I swallowed and took a shuddering breath. I recovered and threw a pissed off look at my dealer—I mean, dining cohort. “What in God’s name have you done to me? Oh, ok, so we’re just gonna open the Ark of the Covenant tonight, huh? That’s how this is gonna go down? You know I can never go back, right?” (Note: At the time of publishing, these questions remain unanswered, and the dining cohort was unavailable for comment.) As fate would have it, I live a considerable ways away, which is tragic, but manageable. As long as Michigan & Trumbull keeps the ovens hot and the corners crunchy, I’ll keep inventing reasons to be in the Metro Detroit area. “Podiatrist appointment.” “Chakra tune-up.” “Needed to feel something.” You get it. Tune in for next week’s special episode: Coney Dogs, a...
Read moreI’ve been wanting to try this place for a while and I’m really happy I stopped in for dinner with my son. Seating is limited inside so I couldn’t get a table to sit down at so we sat next to the window which was perfectly fine with us since it was basically bar style seats. I ordered a double cheese & double pepperoni Detroit style red pizza, the Cadieux E Pepe Detroit style white pizza and the Stanley stix. Everything was absolutely perfect and I was impressed with the unique offerings on the menu. The size of the pizza is generous for the price of the food here so you can easily feed a family of 4 for under $50 here as long as everyone isn’t trying to eat 6 pieces of pizza each. I also really think it’s great they offer the white style pizza since that’s not a common thing to find at other places. Whatever you decide to get you will not be disappointed. I will be back to try more of what they offer.
If you want something that’s not the same as every other pizza place then this is the place to go in Detroit. If you want the best original Detroit style pizza with a large dining area to get a table then go to Loui’s Pizza in Hazel Park. There’s quite a few pizza places that offer this style of pizza and Michigan & Trumbull is by far in the top 3 for me. I’ve been to most of them since pizza is easily some of my favorite food that I could easily eat everyday if I felt like it. I’m glad this place is only a 30 minute drive from my house so it’s easy to add it to my list of places for food options for the future.
The reviews and ratings of this place on Google live up to what I experienced here. There’s been a few with other places I’ve been to that fall way short of what others rate it at so it makes you wonder if it’s even legitimate reviews at that point. This place lives up to their great ratings. I hope they continue to do well and maybe eventually expand the sit down area for dining in because if they were any busier I would have had to get a take out order which would be ok but I prefer to sit down and have a fresh pizza out of the oven to eat. That would be the only downside to the place if I had to say one but that’s a very small negative compared to all the positives about this place.
This is one of those local small businesses that feels great to support by spending money there. I don’t normally write longer reviews like this but this place deserves it. Easily a 5 star rating IMO. Please give this place a try because you won’t be...
Read moreAbout 13 of us were here looking for a place for dinner on the heels of a conference. While I am often the one who decides where the group goes out for a meal, the choice of Michigan & Trumbull was made by one of my colleagues and I am thrilled that he chose for us to head here. You might think what’s so special about a pizza place. Well, it is the pizza itself, plus the complimentary wine. Yes, you got that right – we were served complimentary wine over the course of our dinner, and it was awesome. But again, the pizza – the focus of our meal – was great too. Between the six of us who were at my table, we got four deep-dish pizzas, and we were stuffed by the end of our meal. The ones we ordered were the Long Drive Home, Woodward White, Buffalo Chicken, and the Holy Trinity. Each of the pizzas was great but Holy Trinity may have been my favorite of them all. It was exceptional.
All of us also appreciated the friendly service. Something that’s worth mentioning is that our waitresses did not try to oversell. When we asked her how many pizzas our table of six should order, she indicated that we would be well served by three pizzas. In the end, we ordered one more for our table, possibly because we were having a great time chatting and wanted to hang around for a bit longer. And because that last pizza was the Holy Trinity it was a great way to wrap up our meal but in any event, I appreciate that our server did not suggest that we order more than what we might need.
The icing on the cake was the reasonable prices. Our meal for six came to $69 and with a generous tip of $15 it ended up being $84 or roughly $14 per person. If I were a Detroit native, I am sure I would find myself here over and over again enjoying their outstanding pizza, awesome complimentary wine, and their...
