Everyone says they LOVE Dormont pool, and honestly, I don't know why? I am NOT one to complain. In fact, I always try to find the best in people, places, and things. It looks great driving dahn' Banksville Rd n'at, but parking is pretty rough. I went on a Sunday afternoon (there were easily a few hundred people there).
I took two of my kids with me (one is 9/one is 2). Parking was rough (had to walk far and there was limited parking outside of the pool). Again, it's probably because it was a Sunday. Looked like there parking lot is free parking.
We parked on a side street (about a 5 minute walk away), and then got there and waited in a single filed line to pay. Admission was $8 for me (adult), $8 for child, and Free for 3 and under. THANK YOU, Dormont Pool :) That was sweet of you! My 2 yr old doesn't like the water and clung to be the whole time anyways, haha!
There's a very small desk to buy your passes/pay for admission, and there's hardly any room between the desk/bathrooms as people have to enter into the pool (and exit the pool) by going into the men/womens restrooms which are adjacent to the desk.
The pool is MASSIVE. We had to walk through the womens bathroom, and then out onto a huge patio-like sidewalk all the way down to the shallow end for my kids. It took us about 5 minutes to walk/find a place to sit. We literally sat all ways in the back in a grassy area.
The pool has slanted cement walls (kind of like ramp all the way around the pool) that you have to walk up and down to get into the pool (which might make it difficult for some). My kids and I were fine.
The pool felt kinda cold (and it was like 95 degrees out all day). There was a cute duck slide in the shallow end for the little kids (my 2 yr old tried it twice and liked it). There were always 1 or 2 mushroom shaped waterfall things you can go under that looked fun. But, my 2 yr old wouldn't have liked it so we didn't try it). Also, there was some huge water slide that looked kind of like a sandcastle slide but smaller.
The one thing I did NOT like, was that people were smoking marijuana right behind us where we were sitting, so we went back into the pool. And, there were some "questionable" bathing suits-- women wearing thong bottoms/lingerie like swimwear.
The only bathrooms are at the beginning of the pool (so if my little one had to go potty-- it would've taken us as few minutes to get to the bathroom. They were playing a variety of 80's rock- to todays' hits (I even heard a Praise/Worship song playing-- which was awesome). The music was REALLY loud which made it hard to hear my 9 yr old trying to talk to me from in the pool.
The Best part was being with my kids and meeting a new friend. I felt like God sent her to me to cheer me up a little. Her daughters were also so sweet to my oldest daughter- thank you Ferida!!
All in all, I wouldn't go back. It's too big (even if its not crowded), and the bathrooms are too far away from the little kids side of the pool. I would recommend it for older kids 7 and up.
God Bless and Jesus...
Read moreIt's alright. My biggest gripe is that the shallow area for the kids is all the way in the back (and this pool is massive), and there are no restrooms by it. Little kids need to pee! Especially my toddler who always feels like he needs to go when he gets into a cold pool. Thankfully he holds it instead of just letting go, but I can't imagine how many kids have just peed in the pool rather than power walk across the whole yard.
The trees are nice and provide some shade on a hot day, but they contribute a lot of debris to the pool, which I thought was kinda gross. There were also a lot of little gnats and flies biting us, probably because of all the nature lol.
Locker rooms also left something to be desired. I know pools don't usually have the cleanest facilities, but this one just looks like it hasn't been power washed since it was built in the 20s. Not a ton of actual trash, but just generally grimey.
Parking is not great. They do have a fair amount, and it's free, but it's not enough on a hot day, apparently. We had to park down the street.
They must use some kind of salt water filter or something (?), because I left feeling powdery after I dried off, which is not how I normally feel getting out of a pool. I'm not familiar with pool filter types so idk.
Anyway, I'll probably try other pools in the area. I liked the big shallow area for my toddler, but this one...
Read moreLearned to swim at Dormont Pool back in the 1950’s and spent nearly every summer day there from age 8 to 16. There used to be three diving boards, a low, a medium and a high, the last of which was, I believe, nine feet off the water. The first time I jumped off the high dive it looked like it would launch me into the upper atmosphere it was so high up. Sadly, those boards are gone now thanks to trial lawyers. There were twin metal slides in the four foot depth area that were also very high with a double side-by-side ladder that you would climb to a platform at the top while you waited your turn. I remember it being so high that if you fell from the platform you could expect to be very seriously hurt, but I never saw or heard of anyone ever falling from it. There was a rope stretching across the pool dividing the “deep end” from the shallow; I believe the rope was at about the five foot depth level. At any time if a lifeguard saw you on the deep end of the rope he/she could require you to swim across the pool and back to demonstrate your ability. If you couldn’t make it you were banished to the shallow end and the shame of it all in front of your friends! And, best of all, you could buy a “pass” for $15 that gave you admission to the pool for the...
