This is a cool little place! It is CASH ONLY! We went at night when there wasn’t a line to ride so it was short & sweet. We parked at the top then paid at the window. The lady working was very helpful & told us everything we needed to know. Once we got to the bottom, we were able to get out & walk around to check out the structure & whenever we were ready to go back up we just pulled the rope to ring the bell & she brought us back up. Great views of historical downtown from the top, especially the beautiful cathedral. We spent a few minutes talking with the 2 lady’s that were working at the window before we left. They were super friendly & welcoming. It’s only $4 per person for round trip & it’s open until 10 pm daily! I was a little nervous after reading it was the steepest/shortest but once I got in & we started going down, the nervousness went away. It was a very smooth & steady ride, so no need to be worried. I highly recommend going to visit if you are in the area. You can easily make a full day trip exploring all historical downtown & walking along the MS river. There’s something for the whole family within...
Read moreWell, this activity was too interesting to pass up! The approach left me curious and ready to unveil the mystery.
The Fare was listed on the building. Adults Round Trip was $4.00. Cable Car Instructions were listed on a sign below that. After I read them, my significant other and I got inside the Cable Car that was on the left side of the track. We rang the Bell Cord and we were sent upwards. The speed was slow, so it felt safe. The concept was interesting and I was definitely zoned in.
When we got to the top, we paid and went through the turnstile. I soaked in the beautiful view for a moment. That was worth the price alone. They had a sign stating that it was an Iowa Historic Site.
We went through the turnstile to go back to the Cable Car. We loaded in the Cable Car on the left side of the track and began to plummet downwards. This was a different experience than going upwards. It felt heavier, but still safe.
The service was fast and smooth. Everything flowed nicely.
Overall, this activity was a change of pace. I enjoyed it! I recommend it.

This short but steep ride takes you up the bluff in what’s known as the world’s shortest and steepest scenic railway. It’s a fun and affordable way to take in some beautiful views of downtown Dubuque, the Mississippi River, and even three states on a clear day.
The cable car itself has a nostalgic feel, and the staff is friendly and full of fun historical tidbits. At the top, you’ll find a peaceful neighborhood with benches, perfect for taking in the view or snapping a photo.
It’s not an all-day activity, but it’s absolutely worth the stop. Great for families, couples, or anyone who enjoys a quirky piece of history with a scenic bonus.
Bring cash! it’s just a few dollars round trip, and it’s...
