Here's a review for the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, Minnesota: --- Review of Great Lakes Aquarium, Duluth, MN Visiting the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth was a bucket list item for me, and I'm thrilled to report that it exceeded my expectations. If you're considering a visit, let me share why this aquarium is not just a stop but an experience: - Unique Focus: Unlike many aquariums, the Great Lakes Aquarium focuses specifically on freshwater ecosystems, which provides a refreshing change from the typical marine life displays. This specialization offers a deep dive into the aquatic life of the Great Lakes region, making it educational and intriguing. - Exhibits and Interaction: The exhibits are beautifully curated, showcasing everything from tiny brook trout to the majestic sturgeon. One highlight was the "Tunnel of Tanks," where you're surrounded by fish swimming overhead and around you. The interactive touch pools were a hit, allowing visitors to touch and learn about various species firsthand. - Educational Value: The aquarium doesn't just display animals; it educates. Each exhibit is accompanied by well-thought-out information panels that explain the ecological importance, threats, and conservation efforts for these freshwater habitats. The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, adding depth to your visit with live demonstrations and talks. - Conservation Efforts: It's clear that conservation is at the heart of this aquarium. They engage in and promote several conservation programs, which makes your visit feel like a contribution to a larger cause. Learning about these initiatives was both inspiring and a reminder of our responsibilities towards our environment. - Special Attractions: The "Secrets of the Great Lakes 3D Film" was a must-see. It provided a cinematic journey through these vast bodies of water, complementing the aquarium experience wonderfully. Also, the otter and wolf exhibits were unexpected joys, showcasing the broader ecosystems around the lakes. - Kid-Friendly but Adult-Engaging: While it's fantastic for children with its interactive elements, the depth of information and the ecological focus make it equally engaging for adults. It's a place where both kids and parents can learn something new. - Ambience: The aquarium's design blends seamlessly with Duluth's natural setting. The views of Lake Superior from certain points in the aquarium add a layer of connection to the real-world counterpart of the creatures you're observing inside. - Visitor Amenities: Practical aspects like cleanliness, easy navigation, and well-placed amenities (like restrooms and a decent café) make the visit comfortable. The gift shop is also thoughtfully stocked with educational items, making it hard to leave without a souvenir. If you're in Duluth or planning to visit, the Great Lakes Aquarium should definitely be on your itinerary. It's not just about looking at fish; it's about understanding and appreciating the vital freshwater ecosystems that shape our world. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in nature, conservation, or just looking for a...
Read moreI've had to drive over 2 hours to the aquarium in Minneapolis at the mall of America, and I can honestly say aside from them having sharks...they don't even come close to how amazing this aquarium. It's personalized and intimate. You can take your time and there is soo much to see even animals that are not fish. I always like with my kids and say you wanna go pet some dinosaurs? They have an area where if your patient you can pet a sturgeon. They have absolutely gorgeous views of lake superior and the lift bridge, they have a life size statue of a moose so you can see how tall they are compared to you. My fiance is 6'1" and this moose could easily trample him like a mouse if it was real. My all time favorite though would have to be their eagle. I'm obsessed every time I see it. At first I was sad but then realized that the eagle had been injured which is why it's in the aquariums care because it can no longer fly. Another thing that the Great Lakes Aquarium has is an absolute dream of a gift shop! 😍🙌 When i tell you they really put a lot of thought into their gift shop and the prices. They have something for everyone here and especially gift ideas as well as Minnesota merchandise. Even if you don't have a lot to spend and just want a memento they have little things there like charms or post cards that are decently priced for anyone to be...
Read moreThe aquarium itself is 4 star worthy. Not amazing, but enough to give my kids am awesome afternoon. The parking situation there, however, is a little sneaky. We've gone multiple times over the years and parking was always charged at the little parking thing with the gate as you pulled in. Now, the gate is up and no one is in it. There was no clear signage stating the parking payment was due elsewhere. We drive up and park. There were multiple school groups present and as we walked to the door with our 4 kids, we commented on all of the high school aged kids around the entrance. Apparently there was also a small sign and a kiosk in this same area to pay the parking fee ahead of time. It was not well marked and for all we know, kids could have been blocking the view to the single sign. We exit later to a $35 "parking ticket " issued by a private parking company. The aquarium staff were rude and initially did not want to help my husband with the issue. Eventually they helped call the company, but only after he got them to admit people get upset all the time due to not seeing the sign. Heads up, they don't make the parking situation clear and use a contracted service...
