I've had to drive over 2 hours to the aquarium in Minneapolis at the mall of America, and I can honestly say aside from them having sharks...they don't even come close to how amazing this aquarium. It's personalized and intimate. You can take your time and there is soo much to see even animals that are not fish. I always like with my kids and say you wanna go pet some dinosaurs? They have an area where if your patient you can pet a sturgeon. They have absolutely gorgeous views of lake superior and the lift bridge, they have a life size statue of a moose so you can see how tall they are compared to you. My fiance is 6'1" and this moose could easily trample him like a mouse if it was real. My all time favorite though would have to be their eagle. I'm obsessed every time I see it. At first I was sad but then realized that the eagle had been injured which is why it's in the aquariums care because it can no longer fly. Another thing that the Great Lakes Aquarium has is an absolute dream of a gift shop! 😍🙌 When i tell you they really put a lot of thought into their gift shop and the prices. They have something for everyone here and especially gift ideas as well as Minnesota merchandise. Even if you don't have a lot to spend and just want a memento they have little things there like charms or post cards that are decently priced for anyone to be able to afford.

The aquarium itself is 4 star worthy. Not amazing, but enough to give my kids am awesome afternoon. The parking situation there, however, is a little sneaky. We've gone multiple times over the years and parking was always charged at the little parking thing with the gate as you pulled in. Now, the gate is up and no one is in it. There was no clear signage stating the parking payment was due elsewhere. We drive up and park. There were multiple school groups present and as we walked to the door with our 4 kids, we commented on all of the high school aged kids around the entrance. Apparently there was also a small sign and a kiosk in this same area to pay the parking fee ahead of time. It was not well marked and for all we know, kids could have been blocking the view to the single sign. We exit later to a $35 "parking ticket " issued by a private parking company. The aquarium staff were rude and initially did not want to help my husband with the issue. Eventually they helped call the company, but only after he got them to admit people get upset all the time due to not seeing the sign. Heads up, they don't make the parking situation clear and use a contracted service to trap you.

Although Duluth is sizable, and full of entertainment to draw in tourists, I had never expected to find an aquarium in the Twin Ports. I was more than pleased with what I found. There was the quaint aspect of local species, like ducks and otters and the lake fish you'd see in a huge Cabela's store tank. But what made it "legit" as an aquarium, for me and my standards, was a rich saltwater display. Containing jellyfish and seahorses is a must!!! In spite of covid, I got to dip my hands in the jellyfish touch pool. I don't remember being able to do that at the bigger aquariums I've visited on the coasts. I loved the potbellied seahorses and pipefish, and was amazed to the see the little tank full of dwarf seahorses. The albino turtle 🐢 was a super cute rarity. My only issue is that the gift shop NEEDS to carry "Great Lakes Aquarium" fridge magnets. I never leave an aquarium without getting a souvenir magnet, and the generic "Duluth" and "Minnesota" magnets just didn't cut it for me... tsk tsk tsk. 😀 I told the young gentleman at the cash register of my concern, but I don't he's going to lose any sleep over it. 🙃

Great Lakes Aquarium exceeded my expectations!!!! I was expected only fish that were found in the Great Lakes, however they had much more than that! They had an area where you could pet jellyfish and sturgeon. They also had an Ocean section. Along with fish, they had some semi aquatic animals (otters, ducks, turtles, snakes) and even possums and skunks. Admission was $20 and we spent about 2 hours here. They occasionally teach lessons and they had a kids area with a slide and lots of educational posters. Their gift shop was also very aesthetic and had a lot of good finds! Staff is also super friendly, passionate, and knowledgeable. Overall wonderful experience! I’ll list as many animals as I could think of: sunnies, jellyfish, horseshoe crab, isopod, possum, skunk, trout, ducks, painting turtles, snapping turtle, corn snake, ball python, lion fish, eels, bald eagle, starfish, octopus, sturgeon, muskies, walleye, gar, otters, catfish, seahorse

We were here on vacation. When we arrived, we were surprised to see the signs about parking. The signs told us to go to a certain website, which was confusing. We went to go to the front desk to ask them for help. We saw the parking machine next to the front door. We do not understand why the signs didn’t say that. We were not happy to see we had to pay a minimum 5 hours for $10. When we got inside, the lady at the service desk was talking on the phone. The line behind us was getting longer. We paid for admission without getting any sort of greeting. There were many different activities for us to do at the aquarium. Our son enjoyed watching the different marine life at the aquarium. Our son was a little nervous at the few animals he was able to touch such at jellyfish or starfish. They had a speaker tell us about sturgeons. Our son enjoyed his experience at the aquarium and that is what matters, but we feel the parking fee is quite shady.
