Fantastic distillery with a wide array of options and a fun atmosphere. Lots of great cocktails to choose from, as well as many flexible options for tasting flights - even give you some lime and tonic and soda water in case you want to turn your gin tasters into G & Ts! Fun to try their assortment of gins and aquavits, especially enjoyed their three herbal liquors - smoother takes on Campari, Chartreuse, and Aperol.
Update - after only doing a liquor flight during our first visit, had to go back and try some cocktails! Very unique and well-crafted, especially the root beer foam in the Tragedy of Prohibition and the fusion of pineapple, coffee, hazelnut, and lime in the Tropical Goth. Fantastic notes of raspberry in the Last Word as well! Also went for the Frenchie flight - especially liked the blackberry in the Briar and the house apertivo in the Velo.
Update - back in Duluth a year later, had to return to our favorite distillery! Tried their espresso martinis - one with vodka and one with aquavit - both excellent, preferred the classic vodka, but aquavit adds a unique herbal aspect. Definitely a fun summer menu this time, 'Tour of Italy' Tiny Tini Trio was a unique and fun try despite us not loving the Caesar and Pizza ones, Tiramisu was outstanding, though! Unfrozen Strawberry Daiquiri and Tokyo Vending Machine were both awesome, especially the ube foam on the daiquiri and coconut milk in the Tokyo. Herbal liquor flight is as good as ever! Always...
Read moreFun place with an awesome atmosphere. Cool craft cocktails with some very bold options available. Would highly recommend stopping in if looking for a fun drink. Not the place to go if you are looking for standard rail drinks as the people at our table were hoping for.
Heard about this place at a tasting at Surdyk's in Minneapolis. Finally made it up to Duluth and this was on top of our places to go. It was fantastic. They have a decent number of drinks which cover a wide range flavors/complexities. My first drink was a seasonal jalapeno infused drink which was really good. My SO got a "margarita" which wasn't actually tequila based and it was really good. Her second drink was a blackberry rum based drink that was delicious and looking around seemed to be a favorite. My second drink was much more interesting as it was made with blue cheese infused gin. The first few sips were really good and was almost caramelly. After processing it a little bit more, the blue cheese notes really started to stand out. Definitely not a drink for everyone, but one that I encourage adventurous people try. Still debating if I would order that particular drink again. Will definitely return to the distillery on future...
Read moreI've stopped at Vikre almost every time I've been in Duluth over the last couple years. I love their creative cocktails and assortment of vegan snacks! The menu changes with the season and they always feature a delicious cruelty-free paté. I've loved every flavor, but this fall's white bean parsnip was my favorite; the crostini is always so delicious too. The snack box is fun as well and features a delicious cashew cheese log and vegan sausage. For us vegans, just remember to be careful picking out cocktails because they use honey in their herbal liqueur. I've made that mistake a couple times before. It would be nice if they labeled the drinks with a (v) or something, but until then I need to be more diligent.
At home I always stay stocked with Vikre's spruce gin! It's such a fun twist on traditional gin with additional botanicals such as rosemary. A g+t with this is always a good option if I'm not drawn to anything on the...
