When you drive out 104 to Edmonds in the Summer, you will occasionally see a long line of cars on the side of the road. If you need to get over to Kingston, this line will piss you off. It means that you are about to spend hours inching forward in fits and starts, wondering if you should bail out and go downtown for the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry. By the time you buy your ticket and get placed in one of the lanes, I wouldn’t blame you if you were too frustrated and angry to notice what is going on nearby. If you can, take a few breaths, accept that the ferry will come when it comes, step out of your car and check out the area. Maybe a stimulant isn’t a good idea, but if you can handle it, there is a booth to the right of the lot where you can get a decent latte. Don’t be fooled by the sign that says, “Hotdogs.” Get the coffee and walk over to the shore to get a dose of sea breeze. I have never tried the hotdogs at the booth. There are better options if you are feeling a bit peckish. Spuds is right across the street. They make decent fish and chips and serve it fast enough to get you back to your car before you need to get on the ferry. If you are in the mood for a sweet treat, Top Pot donuts is next to Spuds. Be sure to check the loading time for your ferry. Edmonds is a nice place to walk around. If there is time, you can stroll on the beach or people watch on Main Street. There are a number of art galleries that you can hurry through while keeping an eye out for when the ferry comes in. Don’t forget that you are in a line that will get all messed up if you get distracted and are not in your car when it is time to load. You really don’t want to be that guy. This is a popular area, with plenty of foot and vehicle traffic moving through the same area as the cars trying to get on the ferry. The orange vested folks shut everything down to get you on the boat as efficiently as possible. While they make it very easy for you to get on board, they are messing things up for everyone else. Some of these people will be angry at you for your role in blocking the intersection. Try to be understanding. When you get on, there are people directing you to the right spot. Sometimes it does not seem like it, but they have done this before. Respect their experience and do your best to follow instructions. Everything will go better. Once you are stopped, turn off the engine, then check that your headlights are off. In the dark tunnel of the ferry, some modern cars will leave them on. It is a short ride, but it is long enough to kill your battery. Check your car alarm. The movement of the ferry is enough to set it off and annoy everyone on the boat. The reasons for how they unload the boat in Kingston are a mystery to me. Wait for the crew to tell you what to do. Once you are off the boat, notice that there are two lanes. There are no clear signs, but if you are going to visit Kingston, stay to the left and take the turn when the road goes down to one lane. You will be driving around for a bit to find parking and you don’t want to be a pain for the people headed out of Kingston who are in the right lane. There are all sorts of fun to be had in Kingston, but that is...
