Hands down one of the worst fish and chips I've had. Ivar's portions seem smaller and smaller each year but this trip to "Spud" made me yearn for those smaller portions so I would not feel as bad when I threw them out. People complain about the factory wrapped tartar sauce packets they force you to buy (not even kidding, a fish and chips that doesn't just give it to you even for dine in), but that did not bug me as I a love malt vinegar. While we were ordering, right behind us was a large family with their dog sitting with them in the dining area (not a service dog). I heard a noise to look aback and see them giving her water from a cup at the table. I laughed to myself as I watched water go flying all over the restaurant floor pouring from her mouth as she lapped it up from the "Spud's" chowder bowl. We ordered clams and fish and chips. We were told it was not the panko batter, but what we got was far worse. Two fillets of some sort of overly cooked crumbly brown panko looking fish came out. They were tough and tasteless. The fillets showed signs of actual freezer burn (light tan areas), not sure if it was reheated or fillets that were frozen too long. The batter tasted like pie crust that had no flavoring and was baked too long. The fish was sub-par for a box you would get on sale from the freezer isle. The shake we got was thick and artificial tasting (like a bad fast food shake). The clams were ok, and the only part we did not end up throwing some or all of it away. I LOVE fish and chips and I remember not hating going to Spuds in other locations years ago, this was the last time I will go to this location and not sure if I will ever go to any other Spuds after this. This was so bad we almost asked for a refund (something we have never done).
TLDR: If you want to taste burnt frozen tasteless crumbs around leather fish and you are too busy to burn it yourself this is the place for you. Bonus points for nickle and dime menu (from tartar to fries), no recycling or composting options, Tabasco only in packages, water cups only plastic (remember no recycling), dogs drinking from their chowder bowls, no beer batter.
Conclusion: Owner seems to cut and paste to this flood of negative reviews (sadly did not check reviews first), but never actually improves the food. One post was saying they don't pay for positive reviews...well good for them for not bribing people into lying about the horrible quality of their food...but bragging about not being dishonest shows a lack of understanding of the issue. Also right after that post were about three five star reviews in a row which was the reason I posted...this place is not five stars, it is one star, and that one star is a dead star fish that washed up on the beach last week dead from all the plastic this place...
Read moreMy husband and I came upon this place by accident. We were actually around the corner hoping to eat at another delicious restaurant but were disappointed to find out that they didn't open til 3pm. More about that delectable spot in another review to come. As for Spuds, being that it seemed like a perfect meal for our October PNW weather, we decided to eat there. We walked into what was a nice, clean and bright atmosphere. Immediately we were greeted by the cashier with a smile. We ordered asking her opinion of what she thought was better of two choices on the menu. She gladly obliged and offered her opinion. I always ask just for the fact that an employee who actually eats the food they're serving and has favorites is a good sign. It was just before the lunch hour so there were plenty of choices for seating. The food arrived and the first bite I took was that of the mushrooms. It didn't disappoint and I didn't even have to dip it in anything. Next was my cod n chips. All which were good. Hubby ordered the butterfly shrimp and although I'm not really a shrimp person I thought I'd take a bite. It was extremely buttery. So much so that I didn't really taste any shrimp. My next disappointment was the clam chowder. I absolutely love clam chowder, but not this one. Two words, no flavor. I added crackers and pepper and still nothing. Blah. And I don't know how, but every bite of the other food after that was so salty. Needless to say, as good as it started... well, let's just say it was just at the start. A lot of people showed up for lunch and by the time we were done the restaurant was almost full. I've been at other Spuds and they've been good experiences. I'm hoping this was just a fluke, but we probably won't return even if it was. Too many other great restaurants in Edmonds to return to one that didn't...
Read moreWe tried this place out a few weeks ago. I grew up in Edmonds and was hoping to find a really good Fish and Chips place. Took my Dad with me. I ordered Rockfish and Chips and he got the Cod and chips. The inside of the restaurant is basically a plain look, nothing fancy but it was clean. Food didn't take long but there were only a few people there.
Bill came to over 30 bucks. Thats with only one drink. They even charge if you want Tartar Sauce. I was expecting some really good food with these prices. Very disappointed. Fish portions were small at best. Lots of breading to make it look like more. My Rockfish was very greasy but my Dads Cod wasn't. My guess is they are undercookinig some fish as its coming right out of the freezer and some isn't. Fries were nothing special and a bit soggy too. Small amount.
Now this may seem trivial but that Tartar Sauce they charge for isn't even fresh made. its in a little sealed individual container and its awful. Had a sweet kinda "off" taste. C mon... Tartar Sauce can be made fresh and inexpensive. Really its Mayo, Sour Cream, Dill, Relish, Onion and lemon.
I would give this place a 1 star but hope they can re do this business to make it work. Its in a good area with the Ferry, train and marina nearby. They should up the portion size if they are going to charge that much especially for fries. Potatoes are inexpensive. My portion size of fries I got was basically a cup full. Please, if your going to charge for Tartar sauce, make it fresh and use a large enough serving size. Lastly, I would eliminate the Rockfish as they tend to taste fishy, fillets are too thin and they tend to be overbreaded like mine was. Stick to Large shrimp, Cod...
