Major Market in Escondido. If there is a single place, a single business in Escondido that we simply Must Have, it is this market.
Neighborhood food markets are always one of the centers of a person's everyday shopping life. They reflect that life in how successfully they satisfy the wants and needs of a community. They should be personal, touchable, authentic, and welcoming. In our Big Box, Walmart, Amazon driven lowest common denominator world, Major Market is one of those unique hold outs that give me hope for our culture. It is not cheap and it is not common. It is a unicorn in Escondido. And compared to the prices in other high end markets, like Gelson's in Del Mar and Laguna, Major Market is a bargain, even though you cannot expect Aldi prices.
So what's to like? Well...let me ask you..have you looked in the back corner frozen section of any market within a hundred miles of here and seen Bison, Elk, Duck, Wild Boar, Duck Breast, Venison, and more? It's not that I eat that everyday, but that is a phenomenal offering if you want to get out of your average roast beef rut. Shall I go to different sections? As a single guy, I don't always want to cook. How about a choice of 5 or 6 high quality hot soups for takeout? Hot chunky chicken noodle when you're a little down and sick...hot Chili, cornbread...Daily fresh sushi of a thousand sorts when you don't want to pay restaurant prices so you can take it home and watch tv....An ever changing hot steam line providing such prepared entrees as chicken kiev, lasagnas, glazed chicken dishes, stuffed flounder, and half a dozen vegetable side dishes. And that doesn't include regional cold entree offerings like chile relleno, meat loaf, beef wellington, and such that you can take home, heat up, and pretend you're a chef. You can read the other reviews on different sections like the British, Italian, German, and Swiss foreign delicacies. And the quality and cleanliness are astounding. They must have 95 different high quality and exotic jellies, same with salad dressings, breads, and I could go on. The wine section is also over the top for a "grocery" store of this size. This market deserves to be supported by the people of this city. John Kuper, the manager, is one of the most accommodating professional managers you can imagine. Jeff, heading up the meat area, is a former chef at Mister A's...and don't tell me THAT"S not impressive, because he knows and sells really great quality cuts of meat. And if you want pastries, or a donut, with a specialized cup of coffee (like 25 kinds), they have a little breakfast nook area where you can sit and eat. Or if you want that just right classy desert for after that classy dinner where you entertained company, they have it. Napoleons, Creme Brulee, fruit tarts, eclairs, Black forest, to name a few. And every morning there are turnovers, rolls, and croissants filled with bacon, or cheeses, or ham. They welcome you to sit, enjoy your food, and talk a while. Every weekend outside in the parking lot they have fresh ribs, gigantic tri-tip sandwiches, and sausages being barbecued for the most reasonable prices. Simply unfathomable the energy and effort to serve this community!! People of the Escondido area...do not let this place go away! Honestly, I do not understand how one medium size all around market like Major Market can offer all this on a daily basis, at this level of quality, and stay in business. I go there every chance I get and at any excuse. If i could, I would rent a room in the back and maybe live there...it's that inviting. The Stump family deserves such deep thanks for opening this store and making it such a joyful...
Read moreMAKE SURE TO CHECK EVERYTHING INSIDE OF YOUR BAG. I juste spent over $100 of sushi here the other day and they got everything on my order except one thing. I wasn’t upset about it and when I went back to tell them the missed one order they called me a liar. Why would I drive back to your sushi trash place for just one order?? You guys are rude I really did not appreciate being called a liar over some food that I paid for. They are also super cheap about their sauce so make sure to let them know to give you more when you get there bc if you order for 10 ppl they’ll give you sauce for 2. I’d give them 0 out of 10. Horrible service I would recommend the sushi place near little Cesar’s. Anywhere but here. I had to buy the person missing their sushi Taco Bell that day thanks a lot. Everybody had sushi and one person didn’t bc you guys like to call your customers liars....
Read moreI've only been to this store one time. I was looking for a specific type of hand soap because I had just gotten a tattoo done and couldn't find Dial Gold anywhere and I wanted to take the tape off of it so I could show my friends the tattoo. I had looked everywhere in town, and couldn't find it. Didn't find it here unfortunately but decided to buy some gloves since I hadn't seen those around much either.
Cashier was super friendly, interested in my life. Shocking, isn't it, a cashier who cares in 2020? He asked about my tattoo's and even gave a few suggestions for alternative products to look into. Very nice person. I felt like I had made a friend.
Even though we will never meet again, cashier lad, thanks for being awesome. I probably won't be back, but every time I pass Major Market on my way home from work I'll think about you and the great...
