Every time I go in there I fall in love with a new favorite food. Usually I spend more than I should on fruit I didn't know about that I can't afford to love as much as I now do (I don't live here right now, do you know how hard it is to manage a durian habit in the rural south?? You can't, except to have people HERE go to THIS SHOP and send me frozen care packages so I don't LOSE IT because the nearest town's "ethnic food" is a Mexican restaurant. Do you have a need for mangosteen & little gummy candies with a delightful texture? Do you not yet know that there are lamb curry potato chips in the world? Looking for a cheap (ha! I never leave not-broke! There's SO MUCH cool stuff!!) field trip for your homeschool brood? Thinking aquarium but don't have the cash for a goldfish bowl? Check out all the live seafood at Good Fortune! Ever seen a geoduck? You sure have now! Are you unable to shop hungry, but discovered too late that you are about to do just that? Well great! They have a hot food section, and a bakery! You can get these kick-a** fried sesame balls the size of my fist and munch on one while you wonder what's palatable about dehydrated jellyfish & stock up on numerous mushrooms, sea creatures, Buddha's Hand, something good for that cough (medicinal herbs or traditional boozes, either way), a shampoo that smells like real roses and not rose perfume, all the colors of dragonfruit, then wander down two solid rows of just freakin' tea while you continue to think the same things over and over: "Ooh that's neat!" "Yum!" "What the...?" "YUM!!!" "Oh cool!" "Wonder what that tastes like..." "I had no idea there were so many different kinds of [insert any food-adjacent noun]!"
It's my favorite grocery store ever. Beats hell out of Walmart or Publix or even Aldi.
It DOES smell kind of gross for a second when you walk in. Like one day they're going to find that stock boy Juan who walked off mid-shift a few years ago, and everyone is going to say "Oh yeah, it did smell weird for a while!" But it passes right away, and then the rest of the nine thousand smells are varied and...bountiful.
Anyway one complaint is hardly a deal breaker for a little piece of...
Read moreI've been coming to Good Fortune Supermarket since I moved to Falls Church back in February... I love the fresh seafood and the fresh produce... Why did I give you 3 stars??? Well its definitely not for your product... A lot of the cashiers are very VERY unprofessional... Everytime I'm at the counter checking out, they're on their either on their phones and/or talking to another cashier... Nevertheless, they NEVER greet me or say ANYTHING, even if I speak first... I notice that everytime I'm in line, they're smiling and talking to the customer thats ahead of me and as soon as its my time to check out ,I get dirty looks from one cashier in particular... The last two times I visited your store, I did what I'd usually do and speak first... As usual, the young lady didn't even acknowledge me and just kept swiping my items... She snatched my receipt from the til and didn't even say thank you... With that being said, I'm a black man thats dealt with racism all my life, and I don't see these ladies' attitudes towards me as no different... I've worked in the customer service field for a number of years, and this is without a doubt the most unprofessional service I've ever received from anyone in a grocery store, when I've done nothing but soend my hard earned money on whatever I choose to purchase from your stoee... Nevertheless, her nasty attitude will NOT stop me from visiting your store... I'm never the one to complain about customer service, but this was bothering me, so I felt compelled to let you know about my negative experience... Its all good from when I enter the store, to my purchasing, but its at the end when I have to check out, that I get these dirty nasty looks and unprofessional service from the same 2 women who's line I seem to always end up landing in... Other than that, the other employees were very helpful and kind, especially the butchers and the fresh seafood guys... As I said before, their attitudes will not stop me from visiting but something should besaid or done...
Read moreThis is a very large store that you can spend all day in. I mainly go here for the produce variety and it’s fantastic. There is also a fun gift area, a prepped food counter and bakery. They have a wide variety of basically everything you can’t get anywhere else. It’s worth the trip to see it all and I plan on returning.
Since my first visit the store has spent a great deal of time replacing shelving and cleaning things up. However, the entire plaza still feels dirty. I’m Aldi shopper and am not bothered by the Aldi store set-up so keep that in mind.
There are an inordinate amount of people smoking all over the plaza and near the store entrance. I usually have to cover my face and walk really fast into the store. Not pleasant but not the fault of the owner.
When you walk in the store entrance it smells like not so fresh fish. As you get closer to the fish counter it gets worse. (This is my personal preference so you can keep scrolling if you’re more of a meat eater.) I can’t deal with the fish counter. The odor, fish eyes and seeing seepage are way too much for me. I think most people aren’t bothered.
In the produce department workers bag up expired produce and dairy in bags. They’re left out and are priced as a dollar. The table smells and it probably doesn’t help quell the fish odor either.
I’m cool with self-serve pastries, coffee and dried fruits and nuts. I am not all that ecstatic about self-serve fish balls in an open freezer. No lid or sneeze guard on anything and random tongs all over the freezer.
Despite what looks like a mountain of criticism this is a great place. I think my criticism is due to cultural differences in food prep and sanitation. I spent twenty years in the food service industry so I have some pretty rock solid standards. They appear to be in the midst of changing things up for the better....
