"Well, Govan, if we are to die, let us die like men" were the words of General Cleburne as he and his friend General Daniel Govan parted before Cleburne died charging the Union breastworks on November 30th, 1864. This place, formerly known as Breezy Hill to the people of Franklin, is where the Confederate army had an observation post during the battle of Franklin. I feel the power of this place; the pride in the courage and chivalry of the men who fell at Franklin, one of whom was my ancestor who is buried at Carnton, runs very deep. You can feel it here. The monuments that have been erected will likely stand for some time, and are properly represented in an honorable arrangement around the area. It gives me pride of place to be associated with these men who put courage and honor above everything else and charged to their deaths. However controversial or misguided their cause may seem today, their courage and sacrifice is echoed today in our military and the sacrifices they make daily in fighting for...
Read moreIt looks like a really nice park, but I'm going to go back during the day. I went there tonight because Google said there was activity here at all hours. My husband and I go on walks at places like centenial park in Nashville at night all the time so we didn't think anything of it. There were no other cars and it was not really well lit so we decided against walking very far. We stopped to read the signs at least while we were there plus there were some pokestops and then we saw someone in the woods staring at us! Yes this sounds like some made up spooky scary story you tell to your kids at a camp fire but I am serious y'all! They started walking toward us but didn't say anything. It was really scary. So do not pay attention to the popular times thing on Google, only go here during the...
Read moreGreat little park; lots of history to study. First stop if you are doing a tour of the Franklin battle. I'm disappointed that all the trees block the view of downtown Franklin. It would be nice if they were trimmed down so that you could see Franklin (not Tractor Supply or Target), but enough to get a good perspective. Same problem on the other end, you can't look back from the Carter House area towards Winstead Hill. Love what's being done on the Eastern Flank. Need to spend at least 3-4 hours to see everything, but you can see all the major points in less than an hour, as long as you're needing reading, or going inside the buildings. Great job by the...
