This is a very nice piece of history with an open field and several buildings that can be walked through containing artifacts to help one appreciate life in a fort in Texas the early 1800s. I walked into one of the cells in the guardhouse to get a brief sense of how dreadful it must have been to be locked up in there in the heat. The host at the visitor center was extremely informative and friendly and explained the fort’s and town’s history and showed me the original treaty stone made with the Commanches and I think 7 other native tribes. Read moreIf you are looking for something spectacular and grandiose, this is not it. Instead, Ft Martin Scott is an excellent example of a pre-civil war outpost. Though small compared to more well known locations, it is still a great way to expand your knowledge on an aspect of US/Texas history that most Americans have no information on. There is a seasonal volunteer who can give some perspective on the location, but a self-guided tour is certainly sufficient.
