I want to love this library. I grew up with the previous public library and I was very excited to hear that this one would be opening up. After multiple visits I have to say: it’s a chore coming here. Sit tight because this is a long one.
(By the way- the staff is great and very attentive. This review is nothing against them. It’s the idea behind the library I can’t get behind.)
This library was not built with all ages in mind. Sure, they do have sections for every age group, and they still have quite a lot of books, but my issue is with how this library was built. Around every corner is a child. It’s VERY catered towards kids, which wouldn’t be an issue if they wanted to just open up a children’s library, but this completely replaces the old one, so where do older folks have to go? Pretty much every adult I saw were actually there for their kids.
I am now 21 and I would like to come here between college semesters, but I groan every time I remember how noisy this place is. Even the quiet places aren’t immune to the noise. Sure the library is modern and up to date, but it doesn’t feel like a library anymore. It feels like a glorified play place with books. I remember as a teen going to the teen section in the old library and loving how quiet and closed off it was from the rest of the building. Now there are kids playing video games upstairs nearby I feel like I can’t focus. (I LOVE video games, it’s just theres a time and place for them- why are they so close to reading spaces? If you want to brag about how modern your library is, why not have a special video game room? While looking for books upstairs I kept getting distracted by the kids hollering by the games.)
I don’t mean to sound like an old hag but I can’t stand this place and it’s open floor plan. The dinosaur is cool I guess? but my entire family used to enjoy going to the old library not for its modern advancements but because it felt like a LIBRARY. It was quiet and everyone was respectful. You could hear a pin drop on the adult floor because it was filled with people like me who needed a special place to work. Now my brother and mom are annoyed of this place as am I, and don’t want to come anymore at all. I would rather stay home if I want to study, work, or even - YES - read. I wish I could give this place more, but I just can’t. I haven’t enjoyed it of the 5-6 times I’ve visited.
Reading is for everyone, not just children. My advice to you: if you want to come here to do anything other than play, do NOT go on the weekends. But no matter what you do, can’t just avoid the noisy kids. They live at this...
Read moreEverything about it feels a step down from the old library. The old one was my favorite library in DFW. The lighting, the aesthetics of the wall paint and floors, the way the shelves were organized, and the different areas to sit down and work in. It all felt very cozy and inviting. The third floor was outstanding. It was quiet and separated from the commotion below and genuinely felt pleasant to be in. This library is bigger, but that’s all it has going for it. In terms of interior design it just feels soulless. It’s so big, yet it feels cluttered and cramped. Why is the quiet area so small compared to the rest of the building? No other library feels this way to me, so large in size yet totally claustrophobic. I can’t even really explain what’s so uncomfortable about it; it totally defies logical explanation. It’s something you just “feel.” Maybe it’s the unappealing color scheme of carpet and bright white walls combined with the invasive lighting. You know how you walk into the post office and the lighting combined with the bright white walls just makes you feel kinda dysphoric? It’s the exact same feeling in here. In terms of interior design and decoration, it is a total disaster, and the team who worked on it should be utterly embarrassed.
Also, it seems like a lot of parents take their kids here to just let them run around like its a playground, even in the quiet area. I know we’re trying to encourage kids to read, but turning a library into some kids center with constant stimulation and entertainment totally defeats the purpose of this. They get enough of the constant stimulation from their tablets and games nowadays, how about making a library…gee, I don’t know, a library. You know, a place where you look for books, quiet your mind, concentrate, and get lost in the pages? I genuinely think the people who designed this place actually lost sight of what a library actually is halfway through the project.
The book selection is also really bad. Other people are correct in pointing out that despite its size, the content is totally lacking. Shelves and shelves of comic books and one small half shelf for history. It’s amazing really, that “modernizing” a library is synonymous with stripping away its most essential element: the books.
This library, in its architecture, it’s interior design, and the content therein has the character of a monstrosity. It’s a perfect example of how “modernization” is oftentimes synonymous with eliminating the soul which makes so many other libraries feel “home-like” and comforting. Will...
