Well, the staff are nice...
I don't know how else to put this but it feels almost like a bunch of jury rigged activities that have been set up at a swap meet or stadium-side event.
The inside is very depressing and cobbled-together looking. Several of the "experiments" are in a state of disrepair or don't work in an expected way which was disappointing for my kids. If you are an adult there is probably very little here that will excite you or even compel you to participate in with your children. Their "game" area in the back looks like the remains of an abandoned pre-school.
As an example there is the kids' microscope. The containers that hold the materials to zoom in on are so scuffed up that you can't really focus on anything.
My kids DID have fun but it was the same sort of fun they could have gotten for free somewhere else. I asked them afterward if they would ever want to go back and it was a resounding NO.
To make matters worse there is the National Video Game Museum right next to it and the professional looking displays as well as the decor really outshine this place to the point where I would go as far as saying that it is a blemish on the entire facility.
From a business owner perspective the place seems overstaffed considering the state of things. Also, having a lot of experience in successful AND failed businesses, this place has all the tell-tale signs of "just scraping by". I suggest halving the staff and putting money into bringing all the activities to full working order and then adding several attractions that will draw new people in. What surprises me is that a lot of schools and day care centers use this place as a go-to. Where is the money going? None of my business of course but it is something to...
Read moreI had a day alone with my son today and my wife suggested I take him to the Discovery Center. I was here before, maybe two years ago or so, and had no real opinion one way or the other about this place.
After going today, and spending $17 amdission for both me and my three year-old son, I can without a doubt say that it was a waste of our time. Admission for a three year old was overpriced at $8.50.
And then, after paying for admission, I was disappointed with seeing the same exhibits that were in place some years ago. On top of the same old exhibits, and I'd say nearly 3/4's of them were properly setup and ready for display or use.
Now, they do have a new and temporary 'sports' themed exhibit this year, but my disappointment continued when finding out that even some of the newer exhibits were either not turned on or ready for use! I saw on the website that there is a display that measures the velocity of a fastball, but the radar gun was not working.
Maintenance and availability of assistance is truly lacking. I will not be going back. By coming here today, I not only wasted my time, but...
Read moreWe just visited the Sci-Tech center for the first time for a 1st Grade field trip, and the best way to describe it would be pure chaos. When we first got there, we were given a bubble show where the presenter was using some scientific properties that were way above our grade level and her attitude towards the kids was not kind at all. . Then we entered the center to see at least 2 other schools at the same time as our visit. So there were well over 100 kids, and that doesn't include the parent chaperone. It was so loud it was IMPOSSIBLE to try to even explain the science behind any of the exhibits. Not to mention, quite a few of them were not even working or lacked materials to complete them. They had 2 large vats where the kids could make their own large bubbles but besides a roll of paper towels there was no way for the kids to clean their hands, because did I mention there were no working bathrooms! For what they charged for each child, I was so disappointed. I would not recommend this as a field trip option for any schools...
