I am SO happy I got the chance to visit this museum and Judy Garland's childhood home. It was such a beautiful experience.
Firstly, the cashier was extremely warm and welcoming. She answered all of my questions and just overall really seemed to enjoy her job (my receipt says Sheena R).
Second, the museum section was incredible; it had so many things I wasn't expecting. Everything seemed so well preserved and organized neatly. The floors and displays were very clean and well-kept. When I saw the carriage, I nearly cried because it was just so beautiful, and I have so many childhood memories attached to The Wizard of Oz. It's a bit of a bummer when it comes to the slippers, but it's totally understandable. There is one ruby in a glass case near the carriage which I thought was great.
The home portion of this place was magnificent. It was so well-managed and clean. There seems to have been a ton of work that's gone into it.
The shop seemed to be very fairly priced, and they have so many different things (t-shirts, pin, magnets, books, mugs, matchbooks, and so much more).
Some of the negative reviews here are so frustrating to me because this museum is truly great. Some negative reviews state that there should be more Oz items than the other "stuff," but of course there will be other things here other than Wizard of Oz because Judy Garland was much more than just Dorothy. Other reviews say it's more pricey than they would like based on a large group size. In my opinion, the price of admission was more than fair.
If I ever make it back to this part of Minnesota, I would definitely stop back here (hopefully for a guided tour next time). Thanks so much for this...
Read morecould of had more things from the wizard of oz on display. It was like reading a 100pg book an 3 of those pgs were oz, it was great to see but I don't think any one is Up to date on her stage stuff, barly anything on her movie stuff I seen one thing from meet me in st Louis that was it. The kids area Idk but in the bio museums iv been to there's no play area, it was my 1rst time in that place I was surprised she had 2 other sisters I didn't Evan know that at 41yrs old it was a shock to see she did. Over all from my eyes, remember its just my 1st time experience.......needs more oz stuff an I don't think the children's area is needed sry but that's not y I was there. It had nothing to do with Judy, but just my opinion. An her dad was from superior, I didn't see any info on him, just the female side of the family. I was surprised to see the staff the guards used in oz, that was desplyed now that was cool but again a lot of the props were reproductions. Except the carriage an to find out it was Lincoln's vary cool. I vary much enjoyed myself only living an hr or so away an it was my wife's bday she enjoyed it so that's all that matters. Altho no one is still alive from that era, it was cool to see all the pictures. The slippers I was told the F.B.I still has them, why? Give them bk an let people see them not reproductions or fake ones. It takes the excitement out of seeing them. The ones in the Smithsonian are in bad shape, but there real screen used that's what people Wana see. My wife gives it a 9 I give it a 3 so 13 out of 10....
Read moreWe actually went to the Children's Discovery Center in Grand Rapids which is right next door to the Judy Garland Museum. I absolutely love this place because it has tons of stuff for kids to do especially when the weather is bad. There's several different rooms that are dedicated to different things such as the fire department, the doctor's office, Building, they have an indoor park, you can buy a membership for a year very affordably or what I do is just pay the $10 for an adult and $10 for a child and you can stay as long as you want. The amount of things they have to do is great. My son never wants to leave once we get there. They also have a maze with ABCs, the dinosaur area with dinosaur bones, there a real cast and size. They have a huge area where kids can go shopping and cook and play house. They even have a room especially for little ones that the older kids are not allowed in with a lot of different things to do sensory items and so on. I would recommend this place to anybody with children. As for the Judy Garland Museum. I have yet to tour it but I've heard it's nice. The Children's Discovery Center is pretty much connected to it right there on Pokegama Avenue. Take your kids there you'll be surprised how much fun they have learning instead of being on a device or in front of the TV. My favorite thing to do with my son is the trains. It's so much fun and I love...
