Ike's Beach Service — Attraction in Gulf Shores

Not so much of a bad review for the service this place offers, but rather, the treatment my family and myself received from one of their employeees yesterday. We were staying at an air bnb in one of the beachside condominiums, and went down to sit on the beach mid afternoon. Just outside of the condo we were staying at was a large storage container full of beach chairs. There was no sign saying they were rentals only, and nobody was standing there to tell people they were rentals. Not knowing any better, my parents and I grabbed a few and set them up thinking they were part of the amenities of the condo. Within less than a minute, a young woman walked up to us and asked if we had taken the chairs out. We said yes, due to still not knowing any better, and she immediately copped an extremely rude attitude with us and told us that she was an an employee and that they were rentals only and that she was about to put them away for the day anyways (once again we simply did not know that they were rentals or that they were only available at certain times). We stood up and said okay, and explained we were staying at the condo (again we had thought it was part of the amenities of the condo originally) and didn’t realize as there was no signage around that said they were rentals. We would have been more than willing to help put the chairs back, as it was our mistake. However the employee remained incredibly rude, SNATCHED the chairs up from us, then stormed away and threw them back into the storage bin. I was taken aback by her behavior and before she walked away said “We just didn’t know any better, it was an honest mistake!”, and she proceeded to glare at me and then blatantly ignore me. If you’re gonna work in a vacation destination, you’re probably gonna occasionally come across vacationers who aren’t 100% aware of the beach’s rules. We had no problem following the rules once we knew them, and again, we would have gladly helped put the chairs back as it was our mistake. However, the extremely rude treatment we received from the Ike’s employee was completely unnecessary and very unprofessional. Please do better and train your employees in basic communication skills. We’ve been customers of Ike’s Beach Service for years and have consistently enjoyed excellent service. The attendants have always been attentive, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure we’re comfortable, especially when it comes to providing shade. However, our experience on this trip has been a bit different.

On the first day, the attendant mentioned that they no longer move umbrellas, only chairs, which I can understand given that the chairs are now more portable. However, our chairs were not moved at all, even after we expressed our preference for shade. While the attendant did check on us a couple of times, it was only after we had already moved the chairs ourselves.

On day two, we had a different attendant who did not introduce themself or check in with us throughout the day. Toward the end of the day, we inquired about renting an additional umbrella for more shade on day three. The attendant was polite and mentioned that shade could be limited due to the sun’s position this time of year, which may or may not be the case in August, as we are unfamiliar with Orange Beach this late in the summer. We decided to rent the second umbrella.

On the morning of day three, the same attendant from day two set up the second umbrella, but the chairs were left in the sun. I asked if they could move the chairs into the shade, which they did promptly. The service for the rest of today remains to be seen, and we leave in the morning.

I’ve observed no one on our part of the beach receiving the service I’ve had from Ike’s in the past. But in reading other recent reviews, this seems to be an isolated incident, perhaps only on our portion of the beach rather than a shift in Ike’s standard. But what truly sets this company apart is the team. One employee specifically Annabeth there was so kind, professional, and genuinely dedicated to making our experience unforgettable!! She greeted us every morning with a smile, had everything perfectly set up before we even got down to the beach, and was always checking in discreetly to make sure we had everything we needed.
