As an avid disc golfer I had a mixed experience at the "Big Cottonwood Regional Park - Creekside Park" also known as the Walter Morrison Disc Golf Course, in honor of Walter Morrison the inventor of the frisbee. The fact that this course is maintained in honor of the frisbee is a good enough reason to make the drive to throw at this beautiful course. My visit was highly anticipated and the course itself did not disappoint. There are supposed to be 18 holes, but none of the courses matched what was on U-Disc so that was confusing and there are an A,B,C three holes that are not on U-Disc at all either.
What did disappoint however were the other people at the park. Not only was it very crowded, but it seemed I was the only one who was not playing buzzed. Every single other group was drinking beer, vaping, or smoking. I've never seen so many great golfers who could throw so well with a cigarette in their non throwing hand. Besides the college frat boy wanna be atmosphere, the other problem were the dog owners. There is a large sign that clearly dictates dogs must be on an eight foot leash, but no one obeys it. I had at least three dogs come and visit me and I couldn't really even tell who they belonged to! Even more disgusting was the dog poop. Dog owners at this park treat it like their private litter box. Someone had even rubbed dog poop on one of the disc golf bag holders on hole 4, and I didn't notice it until after I had hung my bag there. (Dang that was lame...I wondered why the smell was so strong!).
One man did say that in the future this will be a paid course. I hope if and when that change occurs that they enforce some rules to make this a better experience for all who which to...
Read moreAlmost 21 years ago my mom had her wedding here. unfortunetly shortly after my son announced his engagement to his beautiful girlfriend Dec 2018 & plan to have the Wedding Jan 2021. Un announced, not prepared, with out warning, without Doctors knowing why or having any answers & way to young (62)my mom passed away april 2019 unable to attend my sons wedding she had been so excited & couldn't wait to be apart of. With the wedding shower planned & only a week away. Details surrounding the venues rules created a problem with limiting the # of guests that could attend..(panic) so after contacting some other venues with short notice. They finally were able to find only one venue that would be alright with the # of guests that had alright been invited (Big cottonwood). Receiving the new address to my sons wedding shower. everyone unaware of the event 21 years & I, unaware thinking I had never been here before. Had no clue it was the same place until I arrived when suddenly i was overwelmed with emotion. I have only been here twice in my life. Once to be my moms maid of honor during her wedding & almost 21years later to be apart of the wedding shower for my oldest son( who was only 3 yrs old at my moms wedding) & his soon to be wife. When I told my son during his wedding shower (Sept 5th 2020) about his Nana getting married In the exact same spot 21 years ago. He was shocked. Then with a smile on his face he then told the story to the love of his life & said, coincidence? I don't think so. Nanas here with us. For me this just became a special & very magical place...
Read moreThis is a very large park and I've still got more of it to explore. This was my first time going to the park. I gave it three stars because I went to two pieces of it one part of which I would have given 2 stars and another part where I would have given it 4 stars. I drove between the sections of the park I visited (that is how expansive the park is).
First, I went to the north part of the park to see the playground there. There clearly has once been a play structure, but all that was left were metal pillars, some monkey bars, and a lone tire swing. We were so disappointed. There was no signage about the state of the playground and what was happening or going to happen with it. There were many people walking their dogs on the trails that went through the trees which surrounded the playground. I bet it is a lovely place to walk, especially with all the fall colors right now.
Second, I went to the south side of the park. There was a very large pavilion near the parking lot there. I could see nearby disc golf goals and several people playing disc golf. There were two sand volleyball courts (connected) with one net. There was a play structure here and some climbing equipment. The kids were happy, especially after the disappointing lack of a structure up north. This was a smaller play structure than what had been taken out at the other part based on the leftover pillars. There were no benches or trees/shade around the play structure. There were no swings. This was a better playground for younger kids rather...
