This State Park has a little bit of everything, for a day visit or even for an hour. You can stop in and eat your lunch in the first parking lot, or spend a day with friends, family, or just by yourself and your fur baby, but be sure to have a required leash on your canine kids, as there are many feline friends living in the park, in appointed areas, and we wouldn't want them hurt by an unexpected puppy dog, who is just following it's basic instincts. You can go fishing from the shore, on the shore or in the shore. There's surf, there's swimming, there's sunbathing, (even in the nude) , but be sure DLNR aren't around, for citations would be handed out. And most of all, there's plenty of places to enjoy a nice Hawaiian BBQ, or family Cookout, or a Birthday Bash, or to Celebrate a Federal or State Holiday. The views of Aloha Tower and Downtown are just spectacular, at times you can watch Cruise ships coming in to dock, or a wide variety of Ocean going vessels coming in to Honolulu Harbor. At the other end of the park, where the Girls Softball Complex is, there's more secluded areas, and the sunsets are just incredible, a green flash is almost guaranteed. The park is maintained and taken care of by Jerome and his family, and they do an amazing job, and the never ending maintenance and new renovations are constantly improving this gem in the middle of the city, which in itself is very unique and you won't find a better more convenient park anywhere in the USA. I highly recommend a visit here, whether your a local Braddah or sistah, Aunty or Uncle, a kama'aina, or a tourist, Sand Island always delivers. Don't forget the closing times change from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm after Memorial Day, and back again, after Labor Day. And be sure to adhere to those times, as the gates will be closed promptly. And please help keeping the park clean by throwing your rubbish in the green cans, and any recycleables in the wire...
Read moreThe caretaker of this park Jerome has been helpful during and after hours. This park is much cleaner and safer then it has been before. There are regulars of the park and someof them take advantage of his kindness but understand that he is no fool. When it comes to his job and the park Jerome will not hesitate to defend the beauty and upkeep of the park but most of all the safety and wellness of each person in the park. DLNR is a different category. They use excuse of how short staff the enforcement is but they only come in the park spend 10mins driving through the park doing nothing and leaving it to this one man to handle. If I was Jerome I would demand for a wage increase for himself and a few of his workers who actually work and go above and beyond their scope of duty like enforcement!!!!! Overall this park is safe and is a great...
Read moreUPDATE (May 2023): This place is still so weird. I love it, with its remnants of WWII and semi-forgotten feel. Restrooms still closed. DEC 2021 : A very strange, and very cool because of it, park that is a lot larger than one would think at first glance. Or, a lot longer. Some very intriguing structures from a recent past, lots of picnic tables and a nice covered area with built-in chessboards on the tables. The restrooms are all still closed (Dec 2021), though there are a few outhouses. Four baseball diamonds with cages, one or two of which are now being re-sodded. Popular for casual fishing, but with an uncertain water quality in the area, catch-and-release seems...
