The act of molding clay on the wheel is indeed therapeutic, as practitioners say. If you are thinking of it, then absolutely give this art form a try.
I did the One-Time- Try-IT for newbies. The studio was well equipped with materials - enough wheels, painting materials. The return of the baked product was within reasonable time. The actual time on the wheel was about 20-25 mins for me, others spent longer.
I would caution you to two things if this is the studio you choose:
The structure of the workshop is clay on the wheel, clean up, torch and paint. Clean up, torching and painting took no more than 30-40 mins in all. So, IMO stay on the wheel as long as possible - that part is more enjoyable and frankly why one takes the workshop. I did not find the instructor giving a clear delineation of how much time to devote to each and I ended up wrapping on the wheel in 20 mins with a little too much time left for the rest, less exciting activities.
Educate yourself on what piece you want to make, how to go about it, what colors and textures look good. Youtube has a lot of stuff on it. As someone doing this for the first time, I was uncertain, very tentative and relied completely on the instructor which let me down. I expected the instructor to be accomodating to doubts and imperfection, throwing suggestions out on how to make our pieces better, and a guided experience at each stage of the process, which it wasnt at all. Overall, my piece was compromised but the experience of the wheel has me hooked.
Perhaps my experience with a different instructor would have been vastly positive. For a newbie, a teacher makes all...
Read moreWould not recommend for pottery painting, piece came out with paint scratched off, as you can see in the before and after this was something that occurred during the processing period. In addition, the total time took 3 weeks, which would be fine except by the time my piece was glazed dust had accumulated and now there are dust particles permanently trapped on the surface. It also looks like black paint was potentially splattered on to my piece, but that could have been a mistake I made during my painting process, although I do not remember that ever occurring. If the price point was comparable to similar options I would not worry much about these issues, but the pottery here costs over double what I have paid at other businesses for larger molds. Maybe give the stores other options a try instead of the...
Read moreI've been to pottery painting before but wanted to try the mosaics. The place wasn't super busy, but being new I had no idea how to do this. No one approached when we arrived and we were left wondering and asking all kinds of questions. Other places I've been, they get the materials for you or ask you what you'd like to do. There was no assistance whatsoever here. Even making the mosaic there was no instruction. You need instructions with mosaics, as you need to cut tiles, glue etc. I was put off by the difficulty of figuring out how to do it myself. For the $$ and lack of instruction I would not return. Other customers next to me who were painting had to ask for...
