Everett Collier Regional Library — Attraction in Houston

I've been coming to this library every Wednesday for 4 years for their toddler story time with Ms. Leona. She was a terrific teacher, engaging and energetic, and gave the library a warm community feeling. She made having to walk past the urine stench at the front door nonintrusive. Since she retired this summer the library has lost its neighborhood charm. No longer do the librarians engage with the parents (teaching library rules and relaying class schedule changes), instead there are an increasing number of rules posted on the walls and we are told to check the website for information. They don't learn the childrens names, and they don't play with them during story time anymore. The connection has been lost. Ms. Leona is no longer there to help distract our kids while we try to check out books. Instead the kids are barked at to stop running around and parents are met with annoyed gazes. I absolutely love this Library! There is so much to do for the little ones. They have 3 specific areas for children, teens/young adult, and adults. Plenty of areas to sit and it's very quiet in the adult section. There's been a little turnover in some of the staff and it takes a little bit for me to get the help I need at the front desk, but nonetheless they are always courteous. Easy and convenient self-checkout stations (just wish they had a little more surface area for those of us who have huge stacks of books to check out). Love the preschool story time. Ms Leona is so fun! Bathrooms are clean which is always a plus. A big meeting room for lots of activities. Love that they display different exhibits routinely throughout the year. The staff at this library is so helpful and kind. I went in for my kid’s passport application after booking an appointment online and when I handed in the documents to the branch manager (wish I had gotten her name) who was checking the application, she pointed out that I had the wrong birth certificate. I requested her if she would allow me to go back home and get the correct birth certificate and she did. It took me almost 30 mins to get back with the correct certificate. Even after being late, I was served straight away and I was able to submit the application. I can’t thank the staff enough. It was very difficult to secure that appointment and if they didn’t allow me to apply that day, I would have definitely missed to apply for the much needed passport in time for our...
