This is my favorite HCC campus. There is only 1 building, so it's easy to navigate. The academic advising and financial aid office is in its own space, and there is a person at the front desk who asks, "What are you here for?" and directs you to the proper sign in computer. There are two separate screens side by side to show the line for academic advising and financial aid.
The library is fairly comfortable, but the older librarians are hard to communicate with; they are somewhat disrespectful. For example, I asked if they had a book in, and handed the librarian a sheet of paper with the book title and author, and I also had the ISBN (in case they didn't have it, I could easily find it at a local bookstore), and he said, matter-of-factly, "Next time don't bring us the ISBN, that's only good if you're buying the book. It's more helpful if you bring the reference number, we can't even use this."
Anyway, they have a small room for printing and copies. A "quiet" open area, a regular seating area, a vast number of computers, couches, and small study rooms in the library.
The main hallway has tables, chairs and coffee tables, and large study rooms (for 8 to 12 people, but they are freezing). There is tons of seating in the other hallways, as well as a nice lounge area upstairs near the elevator.
This is a Challenge campus, so be prepared for high school students. There is a cafeteria open until 2, and 4 vending machines. There are 6 bathrooms that I can think of, and a decent sized auditorium where they have guest speakers present. The bookstore is well stocked, at least it has been for me. They recently have started a checkout line by the textbooks for people buying the textbooks, so you can easily avoid waiting in the other line.
The staff is okay, I wouldn't recommend them, but they aren't horrible. At least most of them aren't. If you show patience and are kind, that generally gets reciprocated. I'm sure you don't enjoy being rushed and having rude things said to you when you're just trying to do your job, so be lenient and realize the staff are people with lives, stresses and worries of their own, and they have a daily work agenda that gets screwed up because of the constant administration changes.
There are some absolutely garbage professors here who can't profess without a power point, and don't know much of the class themselves. There are some less than memorable professors who do so-so. But there are some amazing professors here who are passionate in their disciplines and enjoy professing those subjects to the student body. Ratemyprofessor is a great tool to find those teachers when deciding who to take. I personally look for the teachers who have ratings that state the are rigorous but caring. I haven't had a professor under these 2 categories yet that I haven't enjoyed their class.
Remember, you are in college to become educated, not to make a passing grade to fulfil requirements to get a degree so you can get a better job. Yes, the latter is true, but take this opportunity to become more intelligent. If you want to remain uneducated, save yourself the few thousand dollars you'll...
Read moreWho can help you in the middle of the rain?? Is hard to tell but i appreciated those who help neighbors without thinking or caring who they are. Today i was coming outside HCCS facility and i saw a lady struggling to get her wheelchair out of her truck and i ran to her because i saw she could barely walk and she was not strong enough to lift and to bring down her wheel chair. Her clothes were wet and books were soak and dont talk about her computer. i ask her "Do you need help? and she answered back "yes I really need help over here". I saw security talking on the phone watching lady struggling and i asked the lady have you requested help? and she replay "yes about 40mins ago to the gentleman standing by the door" and I looked towards the door and it was the security on the phone, after i helped the lady I walked closed the the security and i thought maybe he was talking to his boss and therefore he was not able to help the lady. Guess what he was talking on the phone with his friends joking about the lady. and i ran to the main office and i talk to the secretary and she told the security boss what was going on. and security boss ask for an explanation and security said i could not help because is raining and i was busy talking to my friends. Can you imagine if this happen after your 9pm class and someone run after you to sexually abuse or to stab you, or to take your belongings and disappear. Wow security sucks please don’t trust your surroundings watch carefully after you exit the facility, if you see security around ignore them because they are helpless and they don’t care about their jobs even though we are paying for their services. I don’t want to talk about the lazy, miserable cashiers (always angry, full of personal problems, jealous because their future ended in the little room), the lazy staff at the administration window (always eating, chatting on Facebook, and always they will lose your paper work make sure you make extra copy before turning in your information). Am happy with the library staff they are helpful and mature. The book store staff sucks too they are so rude you ask for help and they bark at you. So bad customer service. The counselors don’t know anything I don’t know who hired them they need to study degrees and requirements. The people that work at financial aid also don’t know anything nothing wrong with it but they should not be bump for student is not our fault they are pregnant or their husband leave them or they are unhappy with who they are. The college spends millions of dollars making lots of big billboards, marketing on radio and TV. But they don’t concentrate on changing their lousy staff at least. Maybe they were never trained or maybe no one ever say something. Well to be honest the persona I helped today happened to be a teacher and she was late to her class 45minutes because no one help her. So sad that this could happen in a facility that we pay to have all...
Read moreIf you’re taking an exam at the Houston Community College West Loop Campus Testing Center, here’s some information to make your visit smoother than mine! The Testing Center is in room 146, but this wasn’t clear on the booking system, so it took me a bit to find it.
Finding the Testing Center Enter through the main door with the information desk (I’ve attached photos to show it). This is key, as there are several doors, and using the main entrance will save time. Once inside, head straight down the hallway, and look for a sign that says “Testing” with an arrow pointing right—follow it to room 146.
Parking Parking is easy on the south side of the building. You can park anywhere, but this side is closest to the main entrance.
Check-In Process The check-in process is quick and efficient. The staff are knowledgeable and guide you through locking up personal devices to ensure a distraction-free, secure environment.
Inside the Testing Room The testing room is quiet, clean, and organized. It’s a shared space with others taking a variety of exams—on my visit, people were taking everything from Texas Life & Health to real estate, cybersecurity, TSA, and more. Testing is done on individual computers, and the room is spacious enough to help you focus.
Timing and Flexibility It’s important to be on time for your reserved slot since this isn’t a group testing session. Fortunately, they allow a short five-minute grace period if you’re slightly late, which was helpful for me as it took time to navigate the building.
Receiving Your Results After completing the test, you’ll receive a printout with your score (depending on your exam type). I was happy to see I passed! The staff were friendly and answered questions about my results.
Overall, the Testing Center is well-run, with knowledgeable staff, a clean and quiet environment, and an efficient process. I hope this helps future test-takers have a...
