Just a couple of minutes of Rt 95 and you feel like you are in the backwoods of old Florida. When you pull into this park you know it’s different. Parking spots are in a few areas mostly around the main circle just inside the park entrance. I’m sure it’s often hard to find a spot on weekends. They even have a bus parking space so maybe there are school groups that go there.
You are greeted with a large wooden observation structure with a tower at each end and a walkway attaching the two together with a large area with benches. The ramps to the lower observation area are wheelchair accessible. The park does not have any bathroom facilities which is surprising with how well designed everything else is.
The entrance gate is designed to keep the gopher tortoise inside and protected. As it’s a wildlife natural area dogs and bikes are not allowed. Once inside the gate there is a concrete path that is wheelchair accessible and takes you on a large loop path that feels about half a mile long. For longer more adventurous walks take the yellow path that leads to near the southern end of the park. It’s mostly a sand path and well marked.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the lack of any bathroom and the limited parking. Without those two points it’s an easy 5 star park. We walked exactly 2 miles. Pull in and check it out. If you have ten minutes or two hours you will...
Read moreA wonderful place to be ALONE, until the Homeless Vagrants of Lantana decided to make the Towers their new place of Residence and were completely sound asleep, upstairs on the 3rd Level!! Then, on Easter, I ventured out here for quiet solitude - ONLY to discover the Spanish Drunk Population was also in the Towers - providing Loud Raucous DANCING Lessons, for the High School Prom???? What the hell? This is suppose to be a Quiet Peaceful Setting - I called 911. (It was a darn good thing it was HARDLY an "Emergency" - it took *61 Rings for someone to FINALLY pick up the phone. Over and over the dispatcher belittled me, wanting to KNOW what exactly the "Crime" was... Over and Over, I retorted back that I never stated there was any type of crime ensuing - only that this type of disturbance was highly annoying and downright DISRESPECTFUL to the Natural Inhabitants of this Nature Preserve. The dispatcher haughtily stated that there was NO ONE in the Towers - the Cameras were immediately in front of her. "Birds of a Feather Flock Together~". Nice help, Officer.) Photos...
Read moreUnderstated, not well-known natural sanctuary that offers a well-maintained paved loop (20 min walk) and larger off-trail loop mostly in white sand (over an hour walk). The park is free and open sunrise to sunset. Not much sun cover during the day, except off-trail when in the pine forest, so park can get hot in the afternoons. A dozen or so gopher turtles are usually active, and occasionally there are viewings of birds in the retention pond, or snakes or squirrels. If you're lucky, at dawn or dusk, you can catch a sighting of foxes. The views from the top of the towers at the northern end of the park are the best views to be had. This is an understated, dry landscape that isn't the most popular. The park is not well-visited, so it's mostly a private experience in the sand dunes in between the roar of traffic from US1 and then further, I95. There are no developed facilities nor trash cans inside...
