I found this company while doing a bit of research on what to do while staying on Islamorada during spring break. Let me tell you...A Family Fun Boat Tour Company lived up to ALL of its rave reviews!!
After a week of hit-or-miss weather and a resort that we were not in love with...I was looking for something fun and different to do on our last day in the Keys. I called Captain Heidi and she said there was an opening the next morning!
We boarded the boat and went on a snorkeling and sightseeing adventure. We had two adults and two kids (ages 9 and 11). I had explained to Capt. Heidi that we had had a not-so-amazing snorkeling experience out on Sombrero Reef the year before with a large charter company and that the kids were a bit traumatized by it. She said not to worry, that she could take us to a place that the kids would like and would re-introduce them to the amazing experience snorkeling could be.
We started snorkeling on the bay side and the kids LOVED it...got to see several different species of fish, some lobster, a boat wreck and even a nurse shark taking a nap! She was very attentive to our needs and was great at calming the kids' fears. Really put them in a situation to love snorkeling again. Then took the boat out into the ocean side to a small reef away from all of the crowds (which was an added bonus by the way). That's where we got to see them...Sea Turtles!!! I missed taking a cool photo of them because I wanted to get in closer but just seeing them was awesome. We headed back toward the marina and rounded out the tour with seeing a Manatee. Just amazing.
Not only did we see some amazing marine life, but also we listened to some history about the Keys, the mangroves, and got answers to questions only a "local" can give to you! There are not enough words to describe how great this experience was! It will be number one on our list of things to do when we visit the Keys again. I know it is more expensive than your "normal" charter experience, but this one is worth every single penny. Book it and you will not be disappointed!!! Thank you again Captain Heidi...see...
Read moreI scheduled a 4h boat trip several weeks prior to our arrival to the Keys. Kathy left a very informative VM (Note - if contact via website, some messages may go to her SPAM, luckily Kathy saw it several days after I sent message. So, if don't get email response, I suggest calling them). I called back and spoke to Heidi to schedule - also very informative and pleasant. Plan was for Thurs morning boat trip, but on the Monday of our trip Kathy called informing me that a multiple day tropical system would affect the area and our Thursday trip would likely need to be cancelled. Obviously, not the news we wanted to hear. Kathy offered rescheduling for later that day (Monday), but we already scheduled another activity for Mon afternoon. Kathy suggested I call after we were done with that activity and see what they could do (ex. do sunset excursion instead). After some scrambling on both sides, we ended up getting on the boat at 5:30pm or so to do a shortened excursion from our originally planned 4h. So, perhaps not exactly what I was hoping for, but still able to snorkel and attempt sunset (but clouds moved in from tropical system crush those hopes). Heidi took us to a little surprise snorkel spot - I wont spoil surprise for others. Overall, communication was great, thankful for willingness to scramble and get us in d/t weather forecast, and family enjoyed getting on the water and opportunity to snorkel for first time. Heidi was a knowledgeable and welcoming captain who also assisted with food recs during our stay in Key Largo (Buzzard's Roost was a hit...
Read moreI can't say enough about the hospitality and professionalism shown to our family of four by Family Fun Boat Tour's crew on our private, four-hour snorkeling and sand bar tour of Islamorada and its surrounding Keys. It was truly the highlight of our vacation! We arrived on a cool (for the Keys in April) and breezy day, not sure what to expect. Honestly, after being cooped up in our house for a year, we would have been happy just cruising around the beautiful waters, but our captain had so much more in store for us. After donning wet-suits, we cruised around the surrounding docks and spotted two manatees, which was an unexpected bonus. Next, it was off to snorkel. Despite the less than ideal conditions, our captain found a calm spot and we were able to see so many beautiful fish. As we made our way to the sandbar, the captain kept us entertained with stories from her many years living in the Keys. The sandbar was pristine and so much fun. Definitely a place you could spend an afternoon, if you're not into snorkeling. If you are planning a trip to the Keys, to get the full experience, you have to spend some time on the water. And if you are going to spend time on the water, there is no better way to go than Family...
