Located in the downtown heart of old quaint Johnson City this park is everything you'd want a park to be. With a beautiful broad steam running through the heart of it... plenty of level walkways... local artists works scattered around in beautiful v settings... plenty of room for dogs, kids ... and yes even is adults to walk, jog, bike, picnic... it attracts a broad cross section of people (but not too crowded) and honestly seems to bring out the best in all of them. But that's true for many places in this one of a kind heart of Appalachia Tri-City area. On Saturdays there's a Farmer's Market & throughout the year special events, small concerts, etc... take advantage of this idyllic setting with two very popular casual restaurants on either side of it... YeeHaw's & Wild Wing Cafe both of which have wonderful outdoor style yet warmed seating area! Wild Wings window & walls in good weather are all opened to give an almost tropical style of connecting indoor diners & imbibers with the outdoors. This would be a lovely place if the conjoining creeks, the nucleus of the park, weren't consistently filled with trash. We as a city need to do a better job about keeping our public waterways free of litter, and practice better harm-reduction. What if the city put up signs around the park stating that is unsafe to play in, drink, or bathe in the water? What if we had better recycling and waste management resources? Read moreKing Commons Park was built to help mitigate and control flooding and erosion. So you could say it was a win-win for Johnson City. The park sits on approximately three acres, and it's pretty to walk through; however, I prefer the babbling Brush Creek in Founders Park over the Common's slow-flowing and mostly standing water. Nonetheless, it's nice to have, and the annual Christmas tree lighting event is held in King Commons under the magnificent "Welcome to Johnson City"...
