I wanted a good place to snorkel that had life guards and this beach was in a good location. I knew it was really popular, so I made sure to arrive early, around 0830 on a Thursday. There was a lot of parking available at that time and the beach had a lot of open spaces. Most everyone was crowded over to the left where the kids area is located. My friend and I set up in what would be a straight line from the parking lot.
The water was crystal clear since the ocean bottom is not sandy. I saw numerous fish and some urchins. My friend had a sea turtle swim past her. There was a pretty decent undertow so it was hard to swim against it or stand up, so that was very tiring. For a popular snorkeling spot, the lifeguards were doing a lot of yelling. Don't go near the rocks! Stay close to shore! Don't go near the surfers!
The crowds came by 9 and people were pretty rude about it. A giant beach to use and we had a big, noisy family set up 5 feet away on the left with feral children running wild, then another one came on the right and did the same thing. There was literally 20 yards of open beach to either side of me.
So, go here, go early, go on a weekday, and you'll have some fun before the...

Read moreThis was just our first night on this part of the island. Hard to beat seeing a monk seal, the beautiful evening with a full moon, and a first-time Puka Dog. We ate on a picnic table and watched as the crowds gathered for turtle time and finally started to disperse from the Monk Seal. We saw the monk seal the next day too while we were snorkeling; across on the island where the tombolo used to be. It's a bit of a crowded beach, which can sort of bum you out and make you act on your best behavior, but it really is crowded for good reason. Everything is here because here is awesome. Be respectful to the wildlife and don't interact with it. Zoom is a great tool. If you don't see a turtle, idk what to tell you. You'll almost certainly see some sea turtles, especially if you come at the right times of day. There's enough beach for everyone, including the turtles. Have fun, be respectful,...
