My son and I participated in the coral restoration dive program recently, and it was the perfect mix of education, hands-on service, and diving fun. The education center staff was welcoming and professional, and did a great job giving us very interesting 2 hour crash course in why coral reefs really (really) matter and the specific tasks we’d be helping them out with that day. After a break for lunch, we met up with good folks at Sea Dwellers to gear up and head out to the reef. Dive one was at the coral nursery to clean the coral “trees”. Dive two was out to one of their restoration sites to record some data on how some already planted coral was coming along.

He was much better than a new person. Rules were clear and straight forward. I was glad to take part in restoring the reef. Now I am mostly getting invitations to paid events rather than volunteer opportunities on my e-mail. Like booking a week at Atlantis hotel in Philippines, doing yoga (what does this has to do with coral restoration?) and taking part in Coralpalooza diving event for 100$. Doing work under water is a type of labor and not a fun dive. One thing is to volunteer and another to pay 100$ for doing an actual work for someone. It’s like the priority is in making selfies/wearing t-shirts/smiling to camera. I guess every volunteer event is turning...
