Super close to the water. Even the furthest room is a short walk to the water. The property seems well maintained, the cottage was cute and clean. Great spot to SUP/Kayak.
Pets- NOWHERE on the website do they indicate you will be charged if pet hair gets on the sheets. Most people travelling with pets will search the policies before booking (size limits, breed restrictions, number of pets, etc). There is a pet fee of $50 per pet. Cool, that's pretty standard. But when you get there (and are basically forced to agree to whatever they say, because it's not so easy to last minute find other reservations, especially with dogs), the form they have you sign says that you will be charged between $35 and $250 if your pet sleeps on the bed (they don't verbally mention this, so make sure you read everything). We travel with our dogs a lot and have never encountered this. Generally that's what the pet fee is for! They inspect the room with you before you checkout. We were told we would be charged because there was hair on the sheets, and reminded that we signed the form saying the pets wouldn't sleep in the bed. We said "but they didn't sleep in the bed- they wouldn't have fit anyway" (more about that below). They said "well there is still pet hair so they must have slept on the bed and you signed, so oh well." If you have dogs, you know their hair gets everywhere. It gets on your clothes, which then transfers to the bed. If you accidentally drop a blanket on the floor, guess what, it has hair on it now. We were there for 4 nights/5 days, and with no broom or vacuum available, the hair accumulates (obviously no housekeeping when you have dogs in the room). Black dogs, white linens, very noticable. So even though we followed the rule of not allowing them on the bed, we still got charged because of the hair. I don't care about paying the $35 (although I don't agree with it, that's literally what the pet fee is for), but I am very annoyed that they surprise you with an additional policy and charge once you are at their mercy basically. It just really feels like a money grab. It needs to be updated on the site's pet policy so guests can make an informed decision before booking, not have it sprung on them after the fact (especially because it's "up to $250"). So we paid $100 for them to be there, then an extra $35 because they have hair. They say "pet friendly" but it's only pet friendly if your pet happens to be hairless. "Tolerant of pets" would be more accurate.
The beds were AWFUL. The room advertised a queen bed and queen pull out bed, but the pullout bed was essentially unusable. We would have been better off with an air mattress on the floor. The other bed was like laying on a sheet of plywood, but at least it was flat and didn't have anything jabbing you. Since the pull out bed was unusable, my husband ended up leaving it as a couch and slept on that while I crammed into the other bed with our 2 children. We were all pretty cramped (hence why I said the dogs couldn't have fit on the bed even if we wanted them). It's hard to enjoy your vacation when you are in so much pain from trying to sleep.
The water pressure was pretty bad.
They offer complimentary coffee and some individually wrapped pastries (the kind you grab at a convenience store) in the morning, which is definitely better than nothing, but it is walking distance from some restaurants.
The walls were paper thin in our cottage so our kids got to listen to the neighbors having "relations". When it wasn't that, it was their TV keeping us up- and you could tell it was at a completely reasonable volume.
If you are a childfree, pet free couple and plan to get really drunk and pass out (so you don't hear your neighbors or care about the bed), then this place will probably check most of your boxes. And some of the other rooms might be better! But ultimately we can't really recommend it, and we won't be back. Which is a shame, it really had potential and we...
Read moreLet me start by saying this would have been my 8th year in a row with sunset cove and our group books out the whole resort for a long weekend. All experiences have been respectable until this last year and this year. It started upon check in last year 2023 when we checked in we always book our room for the following year.
When I attempted to do this the girl at the front desk tells me the room for next year is due in full and that is the only way I can book out that far in advance. So I figure this is the same for everyone and it’s a new policy, later in the trip I find out no one else was required to do this so I go up to the front desk to attempt to rebook suite 7 as I always do and am told I can book but now 7 has already been taken and I have to settle for a room with a mini fridge and a microwave instead of the full kitchen we always want because we are part of the group that feeds everyone including the staff when they are able to join us for a plate. Oh well at this point I booked the other room for Friday to Monday. Same days we book every year.
Fast forward to today, since I never got my call at the beginning of the year to put down my deposit (which I had every other year), I decided to call in and pay for the room in full. When going over the details they tell me the room is Thursday to Monday. At this point I explain I only requested Friday to Monday because that’s all we can swing with having a 1 year old and having to accommodate a babysitter for the trip. At this point the manager tells me they will not book the room unless we pay for Thursday even though I didn’t book or request the Thursday nor are we going to be able to make it on Thursday. (Yes we understand the group black out days but this was never presented prior to today and is not the responsibility of our group facilitator, a non resort employee as I was told by the manager) I would think this would be normal practice to say something when I booked rather than booking me for Thursday even though I didn’t ask for that date. After back and forth with her I ended up being forced into canceling my room and seeking accommodations next door at the pelican who were more than happy to accommodate my days and I actually ended up getting basically the same exact room from with them for almost half the price.
If I was a one time customer I don’t think this would way as heavy on me but you guys may have lost a long time patron and someone who has always referred travelers your way. Very disappointed in...
Read moreAvoid Sunset Cove Beach Resort at All Costs!
Our stay at Sunset Cove Beach Resort in Key Largo was an absolute nightmare (family of three with a 2 yo kid and my two parents). The reception was extremely unpleasant, showing no consideration for the fact that I was traveling with my family, including my daughter, a baby, and my parents. Despite clearly mentioning our need for a quiet location and expressing concerns about the cottage's location, the receptionist assured us there would be no issues.
The hotel is located on one of the main roads in Key Largo, so be prepared to hear trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles all night long. The room was catastrophic with very uncomfortable beds, springs that hurt your back, and that squeak all night. The bathroom was in a pitiful state with mold everywhere.
In good faith, we tried to make it work, but it was impossible and a horrible experience. When I went to the reception at 10:05 PM, I was literally thrown out in an almost violent manner by the receptionist, who got up from his desk and claimed he couldn't do anything because the reception was closed, even though Google says it closes at 11 PM. He argued with me and just said to see the boss tomorrow (even though we were leaving the next day). So, who is the boss of this establishment, Patrick or Cristina or someone else?
After reviewing the others comments it seems that I'm not the first who experience the exact same situation and...
