US forts made out of wood were attacked and put on fire by the English navy, so US obtained the fort blueprints from the French. This used to be a three storied fort when built with a three levels of cannons protecting the trade channel.
The fort was used in the Civil War and in WW-1 and WW-2. The fort was occupied by the Union Army during the entire Civil War. It served to blockade the Confederate ports from providing supplies.
