Disappointing Experience at American Rag
Dear, AmericanRag,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a recent experience at American Rag, which has regrettably led me to rate my experience with one star.
While I appreciate the friendly staff who work there, my recent visit was disappointing. I have purchased items online before and successfully returned them without issue. However, when I attempted to return a couple of items purchased previously, I was informed that I would not be refunded. When I inquired further, I was pointed to a sign regarding return policies that was not clearly visible unless explicitly shown.
One of the items I returned was simply the wrong size, and although I wanted to exchange it for a smaller size, it was not available. Instead of receiving a refund, I was given store credit on an American Rag gift card. This experience left me feeling frustrated and undervalued as a customer. It appears that the store may be struggling with customer service and retention.
Having shopped at American Rag since childhood, it is disheartening to see how much the store has changed. A friend of mine, who owns a large clothing store, was also shocked by my experience. If your return policy truly benefits your customers, I believe there is a significant issue that needs addressing. In an era where online shopping is thriving, such policies could hinder the retail experience.
I regret that other customers may face similar challenges. This letter is not fueled by anger but rather by sadness for a store I once loved. My family, all of whom are in the entertainment industry, share my concerns and have decided not to shop here any longer.
In light of these experiences, one has to wonder: if customers can’t get their money back, what’s stopping anyone from simply leaving the store without paying for items? I find this approach unprincipled, and I believe American Rag would be upset if they experienced the same treatment.
Additionally, I encountered issues returning an item purchased online. I assumed I would receive a refund, as stated on your website. After numerous emails, I made the long drive to the store, only to find that returns could not be processed unless the "online guy" was present. Unfortunately, I was told he is only available a few times a week and is difficult to reach.
This series of events raises serious concerns about the customer service and return policies at American Rag. I hope you will take this feedback to heart, as I genuinely wish for the store to succeed and regain its former reputation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely, Ashley...

Lets start with the store, pretty large, packed, kind of like an authentic Urban Outfitters. Without getting into the demin debate which would take both of us all morning, lets just say it's about quality and cut.
The main part of the store is split mens and womens with shoes and accessories playing peacekeeper.
They sell new and used gear, good quality used gear though, so don't' think of it quite like other places. The range of good is from $20 shirts of $2,000 leather jackets and due to the quality of their demin you'd looking at $100-$200 for most pairs.
I found their used items to be a mish mosh of unappealing items used to slap together outfits. Lacking the combination of unique and well cut and quality, "vintage" doesn't always mean good or better. I rarely pick up anything from that part of the store, almost exclusively get denim here. Apparently for those of us who come north they have a 2nd location at Fashion Island which I'll probably be checking out from now on. They are generally staffed well, but I wouldn't say friendly in any regard. Helpful in a curt sense, but company return policy is to pretty much laugh in your face. Liken to a Barney's Co-Op.
Shoe selection is eclectic from some super cheap quality inexpensive models sitting right next to handmade leathers from Portugal, which to me also a little overpriced.
This place is not for everyone as they don't quite cater to everyone and it's not necessarily a...
Read moreMy wife and I walked in to check the store out. After about two mins, a brunette woman said my wife needed to check in her Gucci backpack at the counter per store policy or stay at the shoe dept. Being that her bag was worth quite a bit to us, she waited at the shoe department. While I shopped around, I noticed there were several other women walking around with bags, purses and even large tote bags without being asked to check them in. So I walked back to the employee and asked why my wife was asked to check hers in when everyone else was allowed. She said because it was a backpack. She then walked over to a sign that said” all bags must me checked” and pointed to it. I said it doesn’t specify backpacks but it says all bags, so why were the others allowed to carry their bags? She kept insisting that it’s because it’s a backpack. My wife and I are of Filipino descent and I have long dreadlocks while the other shoppers were whites. They had bags that were more accessible to shoplift with since she was assuming that’s what we were there for! This racist female should be ashamed of herself and the way she treated us like we were criminals! My wife and I were in the area scouting vacant locations to open a future clothing store. I can see this place may not be ideal. This all happened on Friday the 09/02 around the afternoon time if anyone in management would like to follow up with...
