In the late 19th century, a local farmer named Albert August Vollmer requested a flag stop for the South Pacific Coast Railroad near Pollard Road. The railroad agreed and Vollmer named the stop “Vasona” after a favorite childhood pony.

The 152-acre Vasona Lake County Park was developed around the Vasona reservoir, opening as a public space in the mid-20th century. It became one of Santa Clara County’s most popular regional parks due to its scenic lake, lawns, and recreational offerings.

After Southern Pacific engineer Billy Jones died in 1968, volunteers established an 18-inch-gauge miniature railway in the park’s southern end, using equipment from Jones’ prune orchard in Los Gatos. The railroad, along with the W.E. “Bill” Mason Carousel, operates in adjacent Oak Meadow Park but extends into Vasona, offering rides since the 1970s.

The Youth Science Institute opened in 1980. The Vasona Science and Nature Center provides educational programs, exhibits on the Guadalupe Watershed, and a native plant trail named after Viola Anderson.

Since 1999, the park has hosted the Fantasy of Lights, a December holiday light display. It also co-hosts Pianos in the Park. The park offers paddle boating, fishing (catch-and-release), picnicking, and access to the 9.5-mile Los Gatos Creek Trail.

The playground has everything a growing toddler might need, including slides, swings, monkey bars, and a playground structure.
