Nice, flat paved trail with downtown trailhead/parking and another parking access area in Amherst County. I’ve been walking, running, and biking here over 25 years, since my children were babies/toddlers. The trail is just under three miles and shaded much of the way, so even my elementary and preschool aged children could bike it. I’d pack snacks/drinks in the bike trailer along with the baby and we’d have a little picnic at the other end before the return trip. We always enjoyed seeing wildlife… deer, rabbits, squirrels, and even the occasional snake! I saw this beautiful buck this morning. Today my youngest child, now a grown woman, still loves to run here. A family favorite, where we and you too can make...

This is the thing about Lynchburg that I love SOOOO much the history of the city!!!! Being able to go walking for natural exercise in my older age middle years instead of wasting unnecessary money on a gym membership is spot on... The irony and thought of being able to get beautiful views and pictures at the riverfront location that they designed was amazing... I love almost any and everything there is to live about this landmark... The history is truly amazing... The scenery is completely stunning... The walking mile markers are totally genius... The people out and about walking on the trails are Suprisingly friendly... In conclusion the workout and healthy lifestyle is shocking...

The paved trail is clean and well-maintained. Currently (1/2/2021), the trail is closed about 1.5 miles in, at the start of the 2nd bridge, due to bridge maintenance. It should be completed sometime in March. This is a pretty flat trail (definitely the flattest in Lynchburg), and is about 3 miles to the end. A few good photo ops, the trail runs adjacent to the James River. Can be crowded at times, and parking can be an issue (though that’s rare). You’ll see walkers, runners, cyclers, dogs, skateboarders, and even the occasional unicyclist. Be prepared to spot some wildlife, especially deer! This place (and the adjoining Backwater Creek Trail) is a true asset...

3.5 stars - a beautiful place especially to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Lynchburg, cute sign beautiful overhang with panorama views of mountains and rivers, rentable scooters, bike and hiking paths, great water on either side, the only downside for me is the constant hum of the traffic on both bridges takes away from the nature and serenity for me compared to something deep in nature like peaks view park... But otherwise a beautiful place and so close to so many amazing places to eat, definitely one to frequent for a quick foray into nature while in the city...

Main path is level and paved, trees, two bridges so you completely cross the James River. Keep your dogs leashed and kiddos close to share safely with bicyclists. You can walk off the paved path many places to get along the river Easy walk a block from downtown, busy even crowded on nice weekends. Dog friendly but good onto the leash because your dog will spot deer and squirrels and maybe a rat snake etc. The parking lot fills up at popular times. There are portolets instead of restrooms but they are maintained well and convenient.

It doesn't get much better than being able to spend the day on the river or trail and then go out to eat excellent food just a few hundred feet away (although maybe you should change clothes before the restaurant ig). If you don't have time to go far but need a little chill time, there are all kinds of spots to just sit and contemplate the nature of life, the universe, and everything. Or just, you know...cry over man's inhumanity to man. Bonus: occasional duck crossing.
