During my recent visit to Sweet Nothings with my husband, I encountered an unfortunate experience with the service. The staff member behind the ice cream counter, who had AirPods in, failed to greet me or inquire if I needed assistance. Despite requesting to sample two flavors, I found myself ignored as she walked away to serve another couple, who walked up after me. While I don't want to attribute this to race, it was disheartening to observe preferential treatment.
As a black woman, I felt overlooked while she provided extensive samples to the couple ahead of me. This, coupled with the lack of attention, led me to leave the establishment without making a purchase. I've always enjoyed Sweet Noshings, but this particular incident has left me hesitant about returning to this location. Perhaps the midtown one would offer a better experience. They followed us around near the ice cream part and we are first timers so this was very uncomfortable for me as a person who just wanted to have a nice experience at a candy shop with my family and friends. No one spoke, I mentioned it to the cashier she said nothing at all! As I’m swiping my card, I told my kids, never spend money where you don’t feel appreciated. I told them, I didn’t want to disappoint them so they can still get candy, and then the cashier said she didn’t have to speak to me. I asked for a refund and she refused. They were EXTREMELY rude, I hate making things a race issue, but it was a very unpleasant experience, and it seemed racial.
