Over the years the park has evolved. When my family moved here in 1983, one of the big attractions was the park. It was by no means a new park but it was still in really great shape.
Today, if you were to circumnavigate the entire length of the trail, you will still find some of the old workout stations located along the trail.
After 30 years the lumber that was used to construct them has fallen apart so most have been dismantled over time.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the Mesquite Parks Department decided not to rebuild those areas that had suffered the most wear. The blue signs that once described how to do various exercises are no longer there, so you may be left to your own imagination as to how to use some of them.
Most people don't walk the part of the park between Sybil Dr. and Hwy 80 which is wear you will find those old stations. Between Sybil Dr. And Peachtree is what is known as the newer part of Westover Park.
During the late afternoon and early evening on any given day you will find many people running and walking the trail. Westover has 4 pavilions. The one located along Southwest Parkway closest to Peachtree is the most popular and best equipped pavilion: having not only a rest area close by but also two play areas for the kids to keep entertained. It also the most difficult one to reserve. Plan ahead.
Those who show up and try to use it without a reservation are taking a huge chance of being asked to relocate to one of the pavilions farther down the trail. I would use the one at the opposite end of Westover park near Hwy 80. That part of the park is relatively forgotten but is still in great condition. There is also a good size parking lot which is almost always empty except for the occasional car or two belonging to athletes who still run the full length of the park.
In case you find parks a little scarey, especially those that have trails that wander into wooded areas, Westover is perfect for you. It is rare to find yourself alone along the newer part of Westover. Even if you meander down the older part where fewer and fewer people still go, you are never very far from the road and there are houses located all along Southwest Parkway which goes the entire distance of the park.
Late night visitation is discouraged. Police regularly patrol the park at night. They won't tell you to go home if you do decide to walk it late at night, but from experience I'd suggest enjoying the park during the suggested hours.
I'll never forget one night walking the park when I came upon a giant spider web across the entire span of the trail. If I had not been using a flashlight, I most likely would have walked straight into it.
For the most part, Westover is still a great park for your average outdoors aficionado. It is no Bob Eden Park but it still has the same charm and welcoming personality it...
Read moreWe grew up around the original KidsQuest park. It was sad to see the old park gone and a new one in its place, but once the kids started playing I found out it was just as the original. They saved much of the original park to make a monument wall to the volunteers that built the first park. There is a nice tribute on a plaque on the monument. The park has slides for all ages and sizes. There are several different swings including one to allow disabled kids to be safely held in place as they swing. The kids, and myself enjoyed the astroturf hill for sliding. There are even musical toys built into the younger kid section. Well worth the time to come and enjoy if you have the time and...
