The Candler County Historical Society and Museum are located in the historic Metter High School building, which was built in 1921.
In 2001, a new high school was finished and the old building took on several new roles and responsibilities over the next 10 years.
By 2012, the building became the new home of the Candler County Historical Society and Museum. This regional museum highlights the agricultural, architectural and cultural lifestyles of generations of county residents.
The museum continues to improve with age. Many repairs and upgrades have, and will be done to this historic building, and more space will be opened in the near future with new presentations. Residents of the county have been generous in donating articles for display.
More information about Metter and Candler County:
The Metter Advertiser is said to be the only newspaper owned and published by a municipality.
Candler County is one of 25 Georgia counties with the same original boundaries.
Steve the Curator, provided in-depth and detailed information about many of the items on display. The fact that so many artifacts have been identified as to their original owner makes the history much more credible and significant. And as a lifelong resident of the area, Steve has many ties and knows a lot of it's history. If you can't visit the museum during the hours it is open, please contact Steve at the telephone number provided on their site
