I’m Board is an excellent board game store, but I say that because it’s more than a game store: It’s a community of people who come together no matter the circumstances to enjoy each other’s company and play games of all kinds. You play miniatures? Come in for Minis Mondays. Are you a 5E Dungeons and Dragons kind of person? Look into the store’s own shared world campaign, Brightshore. Do you play Magic? They do several different flavors of Organized Play, including two Cheap and Casual events every week as well as Constructed events, not to mention that one of each of those runs Friday Night Magic style. Want to give your kids something to do for a little while? Take them to Pokémon Club on a Thursday afternoon for some casual collecting, trading and battling with the Pokémon Trading Card Game. None of this make any sense? Come in and play board games on Tuesdays AND Thursdays with people that just want to have a good time and laugh for a couple hours. The website’s calendar has all this and more listed.
And that’s just the Game Center in the back half of the store. In the front half, you find staff who know how to figure out what you want, even if you don’t have a figment of a clue. You find shelves sorted by the general genre of game, such as a shelf of party or outright silly games like Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens and a shelf of sci-fi games like Terraforming Mars and Space Base, where more often than not you find your second purchase right next to your first. You find many ways to supplement your game-buying experience such as the Victory Points program (which is often looked up by name anyway, so you can sign up and forget you did until you have enough Points to get that new game free), a consignment-based Used Game section where you can offload your gently used games for store credit, and the ability to order and pre-order games and pick them up when they’re ready.
Overall, I’m Board is the place to be if the people and fun matter more than the games, and its store experience keeps you coming back.
DISCLAIMER DUE TO TIMING OF REVIEW: Given the crisis at hand, I’m Board is currently closed. However, many game publishers with e-commerce sites will allow you to select a game store (I’m Board often included) to receive a portion of the profits of whatever sale you make, so you can still support local game stores like I’m Board even if they’re not open. I can only remember iello at this time being one, but I’m sure there’s...
Read moreI love games. Of the people I spend most of my time with it's the same. Doesn't matter if they're 13 or fit the senior citizen age group, most of us love to play games! And I won't deny that while I also love video games, the interaction and ability to have real face to face conversations when you are playing card or board games has it's own appeal. Frequently several of us will shop together because if we are considering something new, the people we're shopping with are likely who we'll be playing the games with. This let's us talk about if a game sounds like a good fit for all of us.
Since there's so many different games just deciding can be hard. A very generic list includes kids and adult games, and board games, card games, role playing games, and miniatures. And then there's cooperative and competitive. Pretty clean or so offensive we pulled out parts so that we can all enjoy it... So many options and I probably missed half of them.
I rarely know what I'm looking for when I walk in the door so after browsing and possibly coming to a decision, my 2 favorite features in the store are not specifically about what they ordered for their shelves.
1st is the library. It offers the option to try before you buy. The back half of the store is pretty big and set up with tables and chairs and the game library is back there.
#2 Is a newer feature they offer. I've spent most of my time studying this area the last few times I was there. I don't know if it's all from customers or where they come from exactly, but they have a used game section now. And several of the most fascinating ones I have spotted there are not ones manufactured anymore. And it appears they check the condition and contents pretty thoroughly because this section they are all labeled with tags that list condition, contents (making sure it's all there) even if it came from a house with pets or smoking. I can't wait for the money fairy to arrive so I can get my fill of...
   Read moreThis place is outstanding!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Huge retail selection of new and classic games. Large and clean gaming area in the back, with fully stocked free library.
I was in town for work. A local co-worker who loves board games mentioned this place to me. I love the selectiom and they have all of the board games I wanted to see and some I have't heardof yet. The library has current copies of all major games. I was greeted very friendly and then left alone to check out their selection. After abour 15min a staff member approached me saying he had heard I was from out of town. He asked me some quo about what I was looking for and what I like to play. He made 5-7 very good recommendations based on what I told him. I was looking for a game for my daughter's to play. I ultimately didn't buy any of his recommendations but have some very solid future purchases to add to my collection. I did purchase a game and the free library is what sealed it for me.
Thank you so much for making my evening the best during...
