My name is Katie, I own Steller Hair Co. and it is incredibly important I share my experience working with this company.
What initially drew me to Mercury Mosaics:
They create some of the most beautiful and unique custom tile-work in the world. I own a salon in NE Minneapolis, which is located down the street from the Mercury Mosaic workshop. Not only are they local (which I love), they are run by the incredible Mercedes. As a female business owner myself, I love supporting other inspiring women-run businesses!
I have followed MM on social media for a bit now, and have admired them from afar. I recently expanded my salon, and knew I wanted every aspect of my new space to have a story. Being a small business owner, you often have to prioritize function over esthetic. It was important for me to create a beautiful environment for my team, and our incredible clients, so I reached of to Mercury Mosaics via Instagram and asked if they had any broken tiles, or “remnants” that they would be willing to sell me. I was hoping to create a backsplash for my backbar area, and was planning to do it on my own (now that I understand the intricate process of tile installation, I realize what a ridiculous idea that was…),
Not only did they respond, but Mercedes reached out and said she knew of my salon, and had a “crazy” idea. She wanted to help us design, create and install a custom “Steller” mosaic. MM also connected us with local artist, Josie Lewis. Josie’s artwork is what inspired my designer and myself when it came to color scheme for this incredible mosaic. Josie is now a Steller client, and we are forever a Josie fan!
The gift that Mercury Mosaics gave Steller Hair surpasses any expectation I could ever have had. This mosaic is a visual representation of community, support and the beauty of connection. We can’t ever repay these incredible people (and I’m a competitive gift giver, so that is very difficult for me..) but what we can do is use this mosaic to share a story of kindness in an often times unkind world. This mosaic creates an atmosphere and experience for our clients that reflects our mission and values
Mercury Mosaics is so much more than a tile company. Mercury Mosaics is a collaboration of real people who are passionate about their craft, clients and community. I will forever be proud to display their beautiful work, and to call...

I found Mercury Mosaics after pinning several kitchens with hexagon tile and finding they were the common thread. My husband and I just bought our first house and we want to be really intentional with any permanent design elements. I spent MONTHS going on the site, looking at colors, trying to figure out what to pick, and going through the custom design gallery. One day I just decided to click on the Custom Tile link and get a quote - I assumed it would be way too expensive to do something custom so I might as well get it over with find out the price so I could move on to something else.
To my surprise, a member of the design team reached out (the stellar Randi Steingold) with questions about the house and an explanation of the process. We'd work together on options, the design consult was free, and then only if we proceeded there would be a fee....which was VERY reasonable. I was in.
This is where it gets good - Randi wanted pictures of my house, brainstormed ideas with me, talked VIBES. She looked at pictures and thought we could envision it better if she drew it out, she took my future design ideas into consideration...OH and when work got me busy she kindly followed up with me to check in but never make me feel pressured. In the end I had several options to look at - both pattern and color. Once I figured out the shape, we received color samples and I realized I wanted a color in between two blues that they already made....again, they were like "cool no probs"...seriously, blown away.
Anyway, we got the tile, we came in under budget, IT'S STUNNING, people comment on it every time they come over, It's so well made, it's timeless, and it makes me love my house.
Thank you Mercury Mosaics (and Randi)!
PS. This review took forever because it took us many months to get the tile up and our kitchen finished (and I didn't want to upload a partially finished product) so...
Read moreMy wife and I worked with a small design company in Anchorage on an extensive remodel of our kitchen. The designers helped us make decisions about materials for cabinets, countertops, flooring and lighting, as well as suppliers locally and nationwide who make quality products. When they suggested tile for the wall behind our cooktop and around the window looking out from our sink into the woods behind our house, we thought of Mercury Mosaics, where (full disclosure) my niece works. We'd taken a tour of Mercury during a visit to Minneapolis and were impressed with the care and devotion of everyone in the shop. They sent us a dozen sample tiles to help us select a color (we chose a lovely blue-green, 1016 Costa Rica). We wanted large hexagonal tiles to pick up the many angles in our geodesic dome. We went back and forth on a grout color and settled on a medium gray which brings out the hexagonal shape of the tiles with just the right refinement and flair. Our contractor took extra care fitting the tiles together. The result is pretty spectacular. Since the tiles are hand-made, each one is subtly different producing a visually interesting effect that we love. I need to add that our interactions with folks at Mercury Mosaics were all very pleasant, too. The tiles were made quickly and were shipped cross-country by truck and cargo ship from Minneapolis to Anchorage, packaged so well that not a single tile was damaged. Our design team wasn't initially familiar with Mercury Mosaics, but as our project developed, they became intrigued by the company and their products. Given the results of our remodel, our designers tell me they hope to use Mercury tiles with other clients in the future. I will certainly use them again if I have a chance! Mercury...
