I'm not sure why more people don't know about or talk about this great floating museum. The group that operates this has pulled together an impressive array of memorabilia from throughout history. Artifacts range from WWI through the War in Afghanistan. They have sections dedicated to the veterans and equipment from each of the wars, plus an area for the “Muskegon connection,” as well as a memorial to K-9 warriors.
A treasure like LST 393 deserved to be saved and supported. Nothing brings history to life quite like touring an old ship. Learning about the people who served on board, and the feats of service and bravery that ships like LST 393 represent, is inspiring.
Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for students. You can tour the whole thing in about an hour to 90 minutes. But if you have the time, I highly recommend spending more time there. Stop and read the placards with information. Take a few minutes in each section of the ship to take it all in. LST 393 is a big ship, and sometimes things so immense are hard to grasp. But if you spend a little time there, you’ll soon have an appreciation for those brave souls — some who gave, and some...
Read moreMy sister was married on top deck. It was beautiful! We had our rainy back up plan below deck in the large cargo area. My brother and I "had" to use the officers quarters to change for the wedding. It was a little hot and stuffy... I guess you get what you pay for! :D Navy officers were only issued a little 6 in fan back then, I suppose. Still worked!
This place has war reenactments annually with troops and tanks fighting in the adjacent feild and fighters and dive bombers "attacking" the ship. The ship had sailors and marines shooting back with 50 cal and rifles.
However, you don't need to have a wedding on-board or watch Corsairs and P-40s strafing the deck to enjoy this ship. It's a self-guided museum and a beautifully preserved piece of history. You can take as long as you like and go almost anywhere on the ship. (Or at least look) Galley, bunk rooms, officers quarters, engine room, cargo hold, control room, pilot house, fireroom, radio room, mess room, storage holds, even the anchor compartment! They have a little gift shop in the main cargo hold and displays throughout. Great...
Read moreIf you going to military ships please don't miss this one! All Ships that you tore tell you of the campaign and actions they were in. I have never been aboard a ship that is seen so much action as LST 393. Every major Naval action in World War II seems to have been participated in by this boat. The tour of the boat is excellent you're allowed to wander around on your own. At least three quarters of the ship seem to have been restored to at least as good of condition as when it's new. There are exhibits throughout the main deck as well as many of the side compartments. After touring submarines destroyers Etc the LST was a interesting change. It's all the most action what was the simplest and most basic boat in many ways of anything I had been on. Top speed of only eight or nine knots memes you plan to head with this boat. The same exhibit usually has a Vietnam era river boat they can also be viewed and I believe gives rides. Although not glamorous this LSD was one of the best 10 Naval exhibits I feel...
